The annual basketball tournament for Trinity High School’s boys basketball teams, the Holiday Classic, is turning 50. What was to be a year of celebration has turned into a year of salvaging the tournament.
As has been reported, Trinity High School and Weaverville Elementary School/Trinity Prep are without usable gyms. Athletic Director Bob Jeangerard went to work to find a suitable location to keep the tournament from being canceled. In what can only be called an act of charity, Central Valley High School (Shasta Lake) officials graciously agreed to lend Trinity their gymnasiums.
The tournament which is usually held over three days, was cut down to a two-day tournament that will take place Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14. There are 16 teams participating: Anderson JV, Durham JV and Varsity, Fall River JV and Varsity, Ferndale JV and Var, Fort Bragg JV and Var, Hayfork JV and Var, Hoopa Var, Tulelake JV & Var and, of course, the JV and Varsity teams from Trinity High School.
There will also be four cheer teams (Ferndale, Fall River, Happy Camp and Trinity) participating in a scaled down Cheer Competition.
Normally the boys and girls are provided housing from the Trinity community. Because of the venue change, housing everyone was not going to be possible. Luckily that has been worked out, tournament officials report, as the schools participating have been cooperative.
The tournament committee is excited and thankful that the tournament will go on. What has become a well-oiled machine over the years has had to have a little overhaul. It is their hope that this year’s tournament is a success and with the help of the community there is no doubt.
If you would like to sponsor the tournament or volunteer to help in any way, contact Tournament Director Karen Jeangerard at email@example.com or call Trinity High School at 623-6127 and leave a message for Athletic Director Bob Jeangerard.
