The Hayfork High School boys varsity basketball team (4-6, 3-0) won two league games last week, defeating Tulelake 45-37 at home Friday before hitting the road Saturday to defeat Dunsmuir 64-46.

At Dunsmuir, Hayfork led 18-16 after one, and 38-22 at halftime. Dunsmuir would close the gap to 46-40 at the end of three, but Hayfork would put it away in the fourth to seal the win.

Martin Carini led the way with a huge game, scoring 35 points and pulling down 23 rebounds while adding three blocks and two assists. William Kasper scored nine, had two rebounds, three assists and three steals. Dakota Mummy and Hayden Carini each scored seven, with Mummy pulling down nine boards and Hayden Carini five.

It was pretty much the same script the Timberjacks employed against Tulelake on Friday, leading 12-9 after one and 30-19 at halftime. Tulelake would close the gap to 36-32 at the end of three quarters, but Hayfork would hold on for an eight-point win.

Kasper led the way in this one with 23 points, five rebounds and five steals; Martin Carini had nine points and 11 rebounds. Sam Barnett and Hayden Carini had six points and one steal each.

Hayfork girls basketball

The Lady Jacks (2-6, 1-0) fell 74-20 to cross-county rival Trinity on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Hayfork trailed 45-9 at halftime and was never really in the game.

No score has been reported from the Lady Jacks’ Jan. 10 league game vs. Tulelake.

Trinity girls basketball

The Lady Wolves (11-7, 1-0) ran their win streak to five with a 58-37 win at Modoc on Saturday, Jan. 11. Trinity led 30-21 at halftime and extended that lead to 47-28 at the end of the third quarter en route to the win.

On Thursday, Jan. 8, Trinity played a rescheduled non-league game with cross-county rival Hayfork, cruising to a 74-20 victory. The Lady Wolves led 25-4 at the end of the first quarter, 45-9 at halftime, and 65-16 at the end of the third quarter.

Julia Norman led the way with 19 points, three rebounds and two assists; Kaitlyn Hamilton contributed 12 points and seven steals; Hannah Fornaciari had 10 points and four rebounds; and Aubrey Prunty added 10 points, two assists and three steals.

The day before, on Jan. 7, the Lady Wolves again got off to a strong start at Hoopa on their way to a 55-21 victory. Trinity led 16-4 at the end of the first quarter, 33-11 at halftime and 48-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Hamilton led the way against the Warriors, scoring 21 points, three rebounds and four steals. Aubrey Prunty scored 14 and contributed four rebounds and eight steals. Brynn Scribner pulled down nine boards and had three blocks; while Norman score three, but had four blocks and three steals.

The JV girls (2-6, 0-1) lost 59-41 to Modoc on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Trinity boys basketball

The Trinity varsity team (7-12 overall, 0-1 in league) dropped its league opener 55-49 at Modoc on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Trinity led 7-6 after the first quarter, but trailed 24-17 at halftime. The Wolves roared back to take a 36-30 lead at the end of the third quarter, but the fourth quarter would belong to Modoc, which outscored Trinity 25-13 to seal the win.

Earlier that week, in a game much closer than the final score would indicate, the varsity Wolves fell 93-82 in overtime at Hoopa on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Trinity led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter, and it stayed close throughout with the game tied at 41 at halftime, 66 at the end of the third quarter and 79 at the end of regulation. Hoopa would outscore Trinity 14-3 in overtime for the victory.
