Joan “JoAnn” Ernestine Phillips, 85, of Weaverville, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019

Joan “JoAnn” Ernestine Phillips, 85, of Weaverville, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019, at Trinity Hospital, Weaverville.

JoAnn was a native of Greenfield, Adair, Iowa. She was born on May 17, 1934. JoAnn was the daughter of the late Orlin Lester Headrick and the late Phyllis Maxine Peacock, both of Iowa. JoAnn moved with her mother Maxine and stepfather John Serdinsky to South Gate, Calif., at age 5. JoAnn has lived in Los Angeles, Orange and Trinity counties, California during her lifetime. JoAnn was living in Weaverville for the past 10 years of her life.

JoAnn is survived by her children: Judy J., wife of Garry A. Martin of Lexington, S.C.; Linda L., wife of John Hamblin, of Elk Ridge, Utah; Roy R. Hedlund, husband of Christine M., of Dixon, Calif.; Elizabeth E. Hedlund., wife of Larry D. Horrocks of Weaverville; 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Also, her half-brother Neil J. Serdinsky and wife Lonnie of North Carolina and her half-sister Linda K. Vestal, wife of the late William L. Vestal.

JoAnn Phillips was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Weaverville Ward, and was active within the Relief Society. JoAnn had a passion for arts and crafts. JoAnn was an active member in the Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery Guild. JoAnn also stayed busy making baby afghans for future great-grandbabies to come.

JoAnn loved to putter in her garden and tend to her roses. JoAnn’s volunteer services within Trinity County was as dimensional as was her art and gardens, from the Jake Jackson Museum to the Trinity Hospital Auxiliary. Prior to JoAnn’s arrival to Trinity County JoAnn was a volunteer at the voting polls in Cerritos, Calif., with her husband Phil. JoAnn and her husband, Bob Hedlund, worked long, arduous, hard hours as owner-operators of their own refrigerated trucking company and employed their five children for many years as a family business.

JoAnn will be cremated and interred with her husband, Francis “Phil” V. Phillips, at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, Igo, California.

A celebration of life for JoAnn will be held in the springtime — JoAnn’s favorite time of year. Date to be determined.
