April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This month the California Highway Patrol, along with the Trinity County Sheriff's Department, is taking the opportunity to remind the motoring public when you’re behind the wheel and out on the roadways, it’s illegal to talk on your hand-held cell phone or text while driving. It’s not worth it!
Distracted driving is the number one killer for teens in America. Make sure your new and young drivers pay attention to the road. Remember, if you’re under the age of 18, it’s illegal to use a cellular telephone, to talk or text, while driving. It's not worth it!
If you like to listen to good music while you drive, be sure to pre-select your music before you get out on the road. Don’t be distracted by your musical preferences while driving. It's not worth it! Always keep your eyes on the road and be conscious of other motorists.
Multi-tasking can be a good thing, but not while driving. It's not worth it! You have one responsibility when you’re behind the wheel: driving safely. The lives of you and those around you depend on it.
Need directions? Program the GPS before you get out on the road. Don’t be distracted by activities that interfere with your ability to drive. It's not worth it!
It’s important to remember that when you have little ones in your vehicle, you are responsible for their safety out on the road. This means when you’re distracted, their lives are at risk. It's not worth it!
On days when you’re on the run, don’t grab a hamburger or taco and get behind the wheel. It's not worth it! Wait until you get to your destination to dig in. Distracted driving can be many different things, and eating and drinking behind the wheel can be deadly. Always pay attention to the road.
You may think that putting on your makeup while driving is an easy task, but if you do, your eyes are not on the road and hands are not on the wheel. It's not worth it! Freshen up after you get to your destination, not when you are out on the roadway. Looking good isn’t worth it if you are in a crash, or worse yet, injure or kill someone.
Adjust your mirrors, radio, A-C and fasten your seat belt before you get out on the road. Don’t be distracted by these things that should be done before you turn on the ignition. It's not worth it! Just drive. Your life and the lives of others depend on it.
If you hear your cell phone ringing while you are driving, ignore it. If you must answer it, pull over to the side of the road, stop your car in a safe location, and then answer it. It's not worth it! Remember, when driving it is illegal to talk on your cell phone unless you are hands-free.
Forget the distractions and pay attention to driving when you’re behind the wheel. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. During the month of April, the CHP and local law enforcement are focused on taking enforcement action on inattentive drivers. Remember, the alternative, “It's not worth it!”
The CHP and Trinity County Sheriff's Department will be working jointly with the statewide Distracted Driver Enforcement Campaign funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, with special enforcement efforts focused on April 3-18.
