Mountain Valley Unified School District Supt. Debbie Miller announced class will start a week late due to construction delays at the sites following mold abatement.
Instead of beginning Aug. 21 as scheduled, the opening date for Mountain Valley has been pushed back to Aug. 28.
This follows last week’s announcement that the Trinity Alps Unified School District will have a late start date due to its recently discovered mold issues. (The dates for Trinity Alps are different than Mountain Valley).
At Mountain Valley, buildings at the elementary school were stripped and reconstructed due to mold. Similar work was also under way at the high school, with the expectation that the classrooms would be ready in time for school.
It’s the concrete work that is holding things up. At the high school building the approach is not going to be ready, Miller said, and the safety sidewalks aren't going to be done at Hayfork Elementary either.
Sub-contractors are spread thin at the moment, Miller said, noting that the same sub-contractors are working on Proposition 39 and on mold reconstruction for Mountain Valley and elsewhere.
With the changes:
High school registration is moved from Aug. 15 to Aug. 22.
In-service days for teachers are still Aug. 16 and 19, and all staff in-service remains on Aug. 20.
School start date is Wednesday, Aug. 28.
School end date will be June 11. Graduation will be moved from June 5th to the 12th.
