Celebrating Smokey

Smokey Bear made a big appearance at the Trinity County Fair this year, celebrating his 75th birthday. Above, Owen Underwood and Henry Pence pose for pictures with Smokey. The birthday event included a reading of the story of Smokey, a real live bear who was injured in a fire and named after the U.S. Forest Service mascot. Since 1944, Smokey Bear has taught millions of Americans about their role in preventing wildfires. The Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest-running public service advertising campaign in U.S. history, educating generations of Americans.
