Firefighters train for log rescues

Hayfork Fire Department trained last weekend with Cal Fire personnel for a scenario which, in Trinity County, isn’t all that unlikely. According to Fire Chief Tim Spiersch, fire personnel constructed a dummy using fire hose and clothing and then rolled some large logs onto it. Firefighters had to be extra careful while removing the logs to not crush or further injure the victim, or themselves. “It’s more dangerous than people think,” he said. “We could have a real rescue if something goes wrong.” However, nothing did, and the dummy was extricated from the pile. Spiersch said it was a good joint training and the department will be doing other training sessions with Cal Fire.
