While it seems early to declare the first wildland fire of the season, a multi-agency fire near Helena this past weekend meets the criteria.
The fire was first reported at about 3:30 p.m. Friday, in steep terrain near Waldorf Road and Barney Creek, near the trailhead, according to U.S. Forest Service Information Officer Ruth Esperance.
The fire brought mutual aid from Junction City Fire Department, Cal Fire and a Firestorm Hotshot crew.
“The perimeter of the fire is long/narrow, making an uphill run on the eastern edge of the 2020 Hobo Fire footprint,” according to a USFS report Friday.
“The Hobo Fire footprint is holding the fire on the western flank, with steep terrain and snags causing some control challenges.”
However, crews were able to make a containment line around the fire by Saturday evening and overnight rain dumped almost a 10th of an inch of water on the fire area.
No structures were threatened by the fire and the cause remains under investigation. As of Monday, the fire was estimated to have covered 31 acres.
Anyone with information regarding the cause of the fire should call the USFS office in Redding at 530-226-2500.
