The Weaverville woman who was severely burned after fire escaped a burning barrel at her home Saturday has died. Genevieve Herring, 82, died the same day at Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding, the Shasta County Coroner's Office said.

Herring's husband was also injured in the blaze. Information on his condition is not yet available.

A Weaverville woman was burned today, Saturday, May 11, when fire escaped a burn barrel she was using, Fire Chief Scott Alvord said.

The fire at the home on Barbara Avenue got into dry grass and caught the woman’s pant leg on fire, and her husband also had a burn to his hand, Alvord said.

The victim was transported for medical aid. Alvord did not know her condition.

In addition to the Weaverville Fire Department, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and U.S. Forest Service responded.

There was no structure fire, although a fence was scorched.
