One driver sustained minor injuries and another died in a Monday morning head-on crash on Highway 299 near Browns Mountain Road. According to California Highway Patrol reports, Korson Coulter, 21, of Weaverville, sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
At 8:16 a.m., Trinity County Sheriff’s Office reported the crash, sending CHP, Douglas City Fire and Weaverville Fire to the scene. Weaverville Fire Chief Todd Corbett said that when he arrived, the fog in the area was thin and visibility was about 300 yards.
According to CHP reports, Nicholas Stephen Utne, 35, of Redding was driving east in a Ford F350 pickup and Coulter was driving west in a Chevy Silverado pickup. For reasons still under investigation, Utne’s attention was diverted from the roadway, his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with Coulter’s pickup. Coulter’s truck came to rest over the bank while Utne’s was in the eastbound lane. Utne reportedly sustained only minor injuries. No other passengers were in either vehicle.
Traffic was stopped for emergency response, then reduced to one-way control for the investigation and vehicle recovery.
Coulter’s next of kin was notified by Sheriff’s personnel soon after the incident.
