An on-duty California Highway Patrol officer sustained major injuries on Monday when his patrol vehicle was struck by a logging truck as the officer went to make a U-turn, the CHP said.
At approximately 2:06 p.m., Officer Scott Merryman, 46, from the Trinity River Area Office was working a speed enforcement detail on Highway 299 and was driving eastbound on Highway 299 east of Power House Road, the CHP said.
Officer Merryman saw a speeding vehicle traveling westbound and started to make a U-turn to make a traffic stop. While making the U-turn the patrol vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by the loaded logging truck which had been traveling eastbound behind the patrol vehicle.
Merryman’s injuries include broken ribs and a punctured lung, and he was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. On Tuesday, he was listed in critical condition at the hospital.
The driver of the logging truck, 72-year-old Larry Steve Benner of Anderson, had pain to his knee.
The Northern Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is conducting the investigation. Alcohol or drugs are not considered to be a factor in the collision.
