A New Hampshire man was killed and his passenger injured Friday evening, Sept. 24, in what officials suspect to have been a DUI crash southwest of Hayfork. According to California Highway Patrol reports, officers responded at about 6:30 p.m. to the area of Highway 3, south of Hayfork Dump Road. They determined that the driver of a Subaru Impreza, later identified by sheriff’s officials as Dean Zimmerman, 30, was driving northbound when he lost control of the car and hit a tree. Sheriff’s officials said Zimmerman had family in Hayfork but an address in Nashua, N.H.

Zimmerman sustained fatal injuries and the passenger was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding with major injuries. It was determined that neither was wearing a seatbelt. CHP officials identified the passenger as Bak Bakhterkahn, 33 of New Hampshire.

“The cause of the collision is under investigation and it is suspected alcohol may have been a factor,” a CHP release stated. Anyone with information is asked to call CHP Officer Barto at 623-3832.
