American Red Cross volunteers are supporting the Northern California Regional Evacuation Shelter at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds, 1250 5th St. in Ferndale. The shelter has opened to accommodate evacuees of the Hopkins fire and nearby wildfires in Northern California and Southern Oregon.
The shelter provides evacuees with a safe place to sleep, meals, snacks and water, plus health services (for disaster-related conditions) such as first aid, refilling lost prescriptions or replacing lost eyeglasses.
Volunteers are trained to provide evacuees with emotional support and mental health services, spiritual care and help reconnecting with loved ones. In addition, we offer access to case workers who help with disaster recovery and access to services provided by our partners.
All services are provided free of charge.
During the coronavirus pandemic, the Red Cross conducts health screenings and adheres to social distancing protocols established by the Centers for Disease Control and local health officials.
The Red Cross relies on the generosity of donors and encourages those wishing to support its disaster relief efforts to make a financial donation at redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
