GOLDEN AGE CENTER NEWS

BY HOLLY ANDERSON . 530-623-2324 GoldenAgeCenter.org

According to the April 7 edition of The Trinity Journal, our faithful Weaverville Fire Department is offering two helpful opportunities this month, both affecting seniors.

On Saturday, April 24, firefighters and Rotary Club members will be visiting pre-approved residences to perform smoke alarm inspections including battery checks and replacements, and installation of new alarms as needed. The cost is downright reasonable -- it’s free! To get on the resident list, call Marjie at 623-6156 from 9 a m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The other service that the Weaverville Fire Department will be offering is a low-cost debris abatement opportunity. Upon the request of a property owner, crews will remove accumulated forest litter, brush and other hazard vegetation around structures. Priority will be given to elderly, handicapped and lowincome residents in Weaverville, Lewiston, Douglas City and Junction City areas. For more information, call Mike McMillan at the Weaverville Fire Station, 623-6156.

The Golden Age Center is having a difficult time with a lack of funds. This is really not unusual, as we are always on a shoestring budget. But with costs of food, utilities and other factors on the rise, we seem to be currently hit hard in the wallet. If you have any fun fundraising ideas, find yourself with a bit extra money this month, or can help in any other way with our financial responsibilities, please give us a call. We are a nonprofit organization and rely heavily on our volunteers. Occasionally we receive monetary donations from Trinity County citizens and businesses, and that is put to use 100 percent to keeping the quality of the center at its best. Nary a penny is ever wasted.

We have one small request for our walk-in diners. Please remember that luncheon is served at noon. If one comes in late it means more work for the kitchen staff and volunteers. Considering we are one of the very few senior centers that actually provide a sit-down meal served with a smile, we only ask for punctuality. Many of our regulars enjoy coming in early to chat and socialize with their friends, meet new people, play a game of cards, peruse the silent auction, shop at the Blue Barn or play a game of Wii or pool -- all of which is encouraged. Join us early and witness what happens before lunch!
