A SENIOR’S VIEW

BY BARBARA TALVOLA 530-623-2984 • FAX: 530-623-4428

Last week’s Trinity Journal’s article on defensible space help for seniors caught my attention. I called the Weaverville Fire Department, 623-6156, and received prompt and courteous action.

Mike McMillan and Kane Edward arrived at my door. They inspected the yard, front and back, recommended weed cutting, and when I explained I didn’t have anyone to do this, they said when the weather improves they would call to set up a convenient time to do so. They also set a time to check the smoke detectors.

This is a great service, so call 623-6156 and find out what they can do to help you.

The March issue of Consumer Reports on Health is an excellent issue on “Anti-aging from head to toe.” I’ll make a copy for the Golden Age Center so if anyone would like to have a copy they can ask. There might be a small charge but it’s worth it!

The first sentence is: “The same steps that add years to your life can add life to your years.”

I have heard a different version from some who say: “Why should I limit the things I like to do or not eat my favorite food so I can live longer in a rest home?”

We can’t have it both ways. I think if we take as good care of ourselves as possible then we have to let the chips fall where they may!

I know what it’s like to have legs get tired just walking around the house. However, my doctor prescribed therapy.

I go to Mountain Valley Physical Therapy whenever I have transportation. Mark Duckett, owner and therapist, has put me on some exercises to strengthen leg muscles and improve circulation. If Mark’s schedule is full then Paula or Angela take over and do a great job. Because of this therapy, I have discovered the truth in the words, “No pain, no gain.”

When we were young and had sore muscles, we didn’t pay any attention. For example, no one thinks a thing when a young person forgets, but when an elderly person does, worry sets in. That’s why we need good communication. It is so rewarding when we learn that others have memory problems or physical aches and pains.
