Celebrating Chinese New Year

Lion dancers, under the direction of Randy and Rolayne Bashaw, dance their way through the crowd during the 25th annual Chinese New Year Celebration in Weaverville on Saturday. The event, celebrating the Year of the Tiger and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Weaverville, carries on the tradition of Moon and Dorothy Lee who would welcome one and all to their home each year to celebrate the Chinese New Year. At right, daughter Carole Lee (with microphone) and granddaughter Kathy Lee discuss the tradition and what the town of Weaverville meant to the family. Others honored included Florence Morris, Hap Miller and Herb Woods. Vocalist Amy Rubinate and guitarist Jim French paid tribute to the late Jim Augustson. At the end of the dinner chefs Sharron and Duane Heryford were honored by the Trinity County Board of Supervisors and by state Assemblyman Wes Chesbro with resolutions saluting their long-time efforts in helping spearhead the annual dinner.
