Lion dancers will ring in the Chinese New Year during a Feb. 27 performance at the Joss House State Historical Park in Weaverville.
History will come alive when a traditional Chinese Lion Dance is presented at the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park to celebrate Chinese New Year.
This free special event will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, in front of the 1874 Chinese Taoist Temple. The park is located in downtown Weaverville at the corner of Main and Oregon streets. The event is co-sponsored by California State Parks and the Weaverville Joss House Association.
Students from Weaverville’s White Tiger Kenpo Studio will perform the Lion Dance at the park. Chinese believe “the lion will preserve peace and tranquility in the community and prevail over all evil to bring joy and happiness in the New Year.” Hot tea and fortune cookies will be provided by the Weaverville Joss House Association.
The colorful lions will also be seen along Weaverville’s main street stopping at various stores to dance and bring good luck to the businesses and the community for the coming year.
