Reminder for safe winter snow play

Recent storms in the North State are expected to draw many winter sports enthusiasts to the area.“

We want everyone to enjoy themselves, but do so safely,” said Lower Trinity District Ranger Bill Rice.

“People on skis, sleds, snowboards or snowmobiles may share the same travel routes or play areas, so need to remain aware and be considerate of others.”

Rice also noted that hazards may be hidden beneath the snow.People are reminded to park well off the road-ways, out of the way of other traffic, and make sure there is space for another vehicle to pass; don’t double-park, since emergency vehicles may need access.

The following suggestions will help provide safe access for everyone:

► People on foot or skis should realize snowmobile operators generally can’t hear approaching people.

► People on sleds or toboggans should never end a downhill run into a parking area.

► Operate snowmo-biles at a minimum speed near those on foot or skis. Snowmobilers should be able to stop within half the visible distance ahead.All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and snowmobile operators must follow Over-Snow Vehicle (OSV) and Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) regulations:

► Current California off-highway vehicle reg-istration (“Greensticker”) is required.

► Helmets required.

►Operators under 14 years old must be able to reach and operate all controls to safely operate the vehicle.

► Snowmobiles may be operated on roadways or off-road in 12-plus inches of snow and as long as there is no ground contact.

► ATVs are allowed on designated routes only.

► ATVs may not carry passengers.

► Drunken driving laws apply the same as they do on the highway.
