Man sought in shooting, kidnapping
      A manhunt is on for a Redding man with ties to Trinity County suspected of shooting another man in the head Monday night in a rampage that started on Halloween when he reportedly abducted and raped his estranged wife, the Redding Police Department said. Jose Felipe Jesus Mendoza, 48, is wanted in the shooting of his wife's boyfriend, Redding Police Sgt. Bruce Bonner said.

Driver jailed for assault in weekend crash
      A Weaverville man attempting to ram another man's vehicle Sunday missed that car but struck a parked pickup truck, the California Highway Patrol said. The CHP said shortly after 4 p.m. Travis W. Taphorn, 33, attempted to run his pickup into another vehicle being driven by a man with Taphorn's ex-girlfriend in the passenger seat.

Fuels work offered for Hayfork properties
      The Watershed Research and Training Center was recently awarded a grant from the Fire Safe Council Clearinghouse to help private landowners create defensible space and to reduce fuels along the roadways to improve ingress and egress for residents and firefighter personnel.

Forest Service to sell vehicles, equipment
      The U.S. Forest Service will be selling surplus vehicles and equipment by public Internet auction through Dec. 7. The Shasta-Trinity and Mendocino National Forests will be selling 130 items, including cars, trucks, heavy equipment and miscellaneous equipment to the highest Internet bidder.

      Trinity County supervisors voted Tuesday to rescind employee furloughs they approved in October and county offices that were due to be closed this Friday in the courthouse and elsewhere will now be open for business as usual.

Sheriff won't seek re-election
      Trinity County Sheriff Lorrac Craig announced yesterday that he will not be seeking re-election next year after his current term in office expires. He informed the Board of Supervisors that he is undergoing therapy for a medical issue and has opted for a six-month course of radiation treatment versus surgery.

Maintenance of aging Trinity County Jail is costly
      Trinity County's 33-year-old jail is in a constant maintenance/ repair mode and "it's become a major expense to keep that place running now," according to Sheriff Lorrac Craig during a recent strategic planning session with the Board of Supervisors regarding deferred maintenance issues in county-owned facilities.

      A rezone of Highway Commercial property to Rural Residential allowing for a vineyard, orchard and organic farm to be developed on property along Van Duzen Road in Mad River was recently approved by the Trinity County Board of Supervisors over a neighbor's objection to the project.

      The Trinity County Board of Supervisors has endorsed the concept of using federal funds to purchase the abandoned town site of Old Helena and converting the private property to public ownership in order to preserve the historic site.
