Driver jailed for assault in weekend crash
BRIDGET CARSON THE TRINITY JOURNAL The California Highway Patrol and Weaverville volunteer firefighters responded when a white pickup struck a parked pickup, causing it to hit another parked vehicle and flip on its side. A Weaverville man attempting to ram another man's vehicle Sunday missed that car but struck a parked pickup truck, the California Highway Patrol said.
The CHP said shortly after 4 p.m. Travis W. Taphorn, 33, attempted to run his pickup into another vehicle being driven by a man with Taphorn's ex-girlfriend in the passenger seat. The other driver evaded him, but Taphorn instead ran into a vehicle parked on Highway 299 near Highway 3, the CHP said.
Taphorn fled but was found a short time later by a sheriff's deputy. It was determined that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol, the CHP said.
Taphorn was treated at Trinity Hospital for cuts and scrapes to his leg and head, and then booked into the Trinity County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, DUI and other vehicle code violations.
