Headed for trouble
A non-local steelhead guide and his clients capsized their drift boat in the Trinity River at Lime Point, Junction City, this past Saturday. The group had fly-fished the Lime Point hole on foot, then launched directly into the main current at a badly undercut, willow-lined bankside. The current swept them under the willows, tipped the boat onto its side, scraped them down the bank and filled the boat with water up to the gunwales, top. The swamped boat was then swept broadside into a small, in-river willow, middle, where the boat again turned onto its side and dumped the guide, clients and gear into the river, below. Neither the guide nor any of his clients were hurt. This is an important reminder that all anglers, whether on foot or afloat, should be vigilant and take all safety measures seriously while on the water. As an angler's death downriver demonstrated earlier this year, the Trinity River can be unforgiving for anglers who lose their footing or lose control of their boat.
