Attempted murder case heads for trial
      A Trinity Pines man was held to answer to an attempted murder charge last week, over the arguments of his attorney who said no evidence of intent was shown at the preliminary hearing.

Two rescued in Alps
      Two hunters injured in separate accidents in the Trinity Alps last week were taken to Mercy Medical Center after rescues that involved several agencies. The first incident reported at just after 4 p m. Oct. 6 involved a man who fell at Twin Sisters Mountain the previous day and was unable to move.

Garden hit by vandals
      Vandalism and theft to the community garden at Lowden Park will cost hundreds of dollars, said Sonja Williams, coordinator of the Children's Garden Project. The damage discovered Friday morning included theft of five water timers, a hole cut in the fence, a broken fence post and a broken faucet line, Williams said.

PG&E sued in '07 fires
      The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is suing PG&E over two fires near Hayfork in 2007, alleging the company did not properly maintain a transmission line that sparked the blazes. The Summit Fire at the intersection of Summit Creek Road and Duncan Lane and the Wild Fire at Highway 299 and Wildwood Road started Sept. 9, 2007.

Cal Fire lifts burn ban
      The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has lifted burning restrictions on the Shasta-Trinity Unit. Burn permits will be required in Trinity County by the North Coast Air Quality Management District.

Eight more Main Street trees on next year's chopping block
      As Caltrans makes plans to remove more large trees along Highway 299/Main Street in the downtown Weaverville historic district next year, an agency representative last week promised to work with concerned citizens on a tree replacement plan.

      Two of Trinity County's largest special districts are late paying a bill — and it's not due to an oversight. The Trinity Public Utilities District and Weaverville Community Services District are protesting bills from the Trinity Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO).

      Candidate statements for the Nov. 3 school board elections in Trinity County will be run in the Journal's Oct. 28 issue. There are three races: In the Trinity Alps Unified School District, there is a contest for one of the Area 1 representative seats. Both Jiraporn Dow Angspatt and Stephen Hagen have filed for Area 1, Weaverville.

Downtown paving slated
      As part of its sidewalk repair project, Caltrans will be cutting, grinding and repaving a 4-foot strip of asphalt along the south side of Highway 299 from Court Street to The Diggins in downtown Weaverville starting at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. The project will take most of the day.

      The Dutch Oven Cook-off sponsored by the Trinity County Historical Society drew a crowd Saturday. Seven teams competed for People's Choice cash prizes for three categories: main dish, bread and dessert.

Youngsters targeted for initial swine flu vaccines
      Trinity County Health and Human Services has received an initial shipment of H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine. This is a very small shipment of live attenuated nasal spray vaccine. HHS expects additional shipments of both the inactivated (injectable) H1N1 vaccine and the nasal spray vaccine in the near future.

      The Trinity County Health & Human Services 2009 senior seasonal flu shot schedule is as follows. Supplies are limited to Trinity County seniors age 60 or older and others with chronic health problems per CDC guidelines who are unable to get vaccinated through their regular health care provider.

Wildwood Road widening proposed
      A proposed project to realign and widen approximately 6.6 miles of Wildwood Road to two standard travel lanes over the next several years is the subject of an environmental impact report now being undertaken by the Trinity County Department of Transportation.

Breast cancer info to be distributed
      Every year in California more than 21,000 women and approximately 180 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. But thanks to strides in early detection and medical treatment, lives are being saved. October has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness month, and Think Pink day is Thursday, Oct. 15.

Prescribed burns scheduled
      Prescribed burning projects are planned to begin this fall on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest as low temperatures continue. "Cooler weather and moisture have moved into the area in the past few weeks," Fuels and Fire Prevention Specialist Julie Titus said.

Food drive to benefit mill workers
      Weaverville Curves and Soroptimist International of Trinity County are joining efforts in a major food drive campaign to help mill workers who have lost their jobs due to the fire. Historically, Curves collects close to 2,000 pounds of food during its March campaign to help food cupboards in Trinity County.

      First District Assemblyman Wesley Chesbro, D-Arcata, is scheduled to spend the day in Weaverville meeting with constituents on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Following is his schedule: 11 a.m.: Chesbro will attend the Trinity County Board of Supervisors meeting to present a summary of the recent legislative session.

Local man graduates U.S. Marine Corps boot camp
      Platoon Honorman Bryan Millard Pedrotti, 17, of Weaverville graduated from United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, on Oct. 2. Pedrotti successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD San Diego as one of 88 recruits in Training Platoon 2113.

Fallen Trinity firefighter Karen Savage to be honored
      Karen Savage, the Trinity County firefighter who died 10 years ago fighting the Jones Fire in Shasta County, will be remembered during a tribute this Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Bella Vista Fire Department. Savage, a 44-year-old mother of three, died Oct. 16, 1999, when she fell beneath the wheel of a fire engine.
