Hayfork Lady Timberjacks improve for a new year of volleyball

BY BILL MUSICK FOR THE TRINITY JOURNAL

The Hayfork High School Lady Timberjacks are on a four-game win streak after defeating Redding Adventist 3-1 in the North Valley League opener for both teams Thursday in Redding.

The addition of sophomore Emily Arnold to the varsity has helped keep the team on track and added a positive dimension. Arnold made her varsity debut in the second game of Monday's match against Redding Christian, won by Hayfork 3-1. In the league match against Redding Adventist Arnold contributed three well-placed kills and a block to give the juniordominated team an additional spark.

Christine Champion (Amore) is getting the hang of her position as Opposite. "She took the prize at Redding Adventist with her clear calls to her teammates.

"Communication is what it takes in this sport and teammates have to talk to each other," coach Amy Curry said. "Champion is not afraid to get on the floor ."

Curry added, "Rebecca Oakley gets into her position as a back row player and plays with focus and intention and she continues to improve with each match."

Tatiana Gurries continues to receive and dig well playing back row.

"Gurries is a strong server and plays remarkably well " Curry said.

Samantha Smith is a fan pleaser with her serves. "Her swing is getting stronger and her quick reflexes help the team in scoring." Curry said.

Setter Alysha Yeske "uses good judgment in setting up the offense and can always be counted on for serving points as exhibited by her three aces against Redding Adventist," Curry said.

"The 'workhorse' of the team is Jamie Curry," coach Curry said. "Against Redding Adventist she had seven aces and 14 kills in 29 attempts."

Senior Melia Mercill is the team's best passer.

"Her swing is a strong asset this season" said Curry.

The Lady Timberjacks next home game is Tuesday, Oct. 13, against Maxwell, followed by travel to Westwood on Thursday, Oct. 15.
