Fire danger not reliant on canopy percentage
As a forester who has spent close to four decades working in the forests of Northern California, writing forest management plans for individuals and fire management plans for communities in Trinity County, and helping to manage the Weaverville Community Forest,

Time to reform marijuana laws
Kudos for the timely and informative letter to the editor concerning the extensive damage to the Shasta-Trinity National Forest resulting from the illegal large-scale marijuana growers. I agree that this "taking over of our public lands" is indeed a horrendous problem.

More on hunting
I called Fish and Game in Sacramento — they have no such data on wounded animals and said there are things floating around by animal rights groups that go from 14 percent to 80 percent depending on the day. The truth lies somewhere in between of course. I would lean toward 14 percent.

Firesafe property
Like snow in summer the wood chips fell gently from the air onto the newly sunlit bank of our property on Top of the Grade Road. Trinity County Resource Conservation District and its fabulous five man crew, in an effort to firesafe this area, made mincemeat out of what could have be Cal Fire's next nightmare.

Appreciates sidewalk fix
I really appreciate the sidewalk repairs that have been done in downtown Weaverville. As someone who has tripped over the broken pavement and fallen, I say thanks to Caltrans and the crew working hard to make our downtown safe and attractive.

He describes eloquently how American people pool their taxes to provide citizens with wonderful services such as roads, education, Social Security and Medicare for the retired.

Concern over health plan
I'm not usually one to jump head first into a political debate. However, this new health insurance debate has finally crossed the line between me not caring and me having serious concerns. Mr. Obama is pushing legislation to mandate that everyone have health insurance, and if they don't, they'll have to pay a tax. I've read the proposed legislation, and yes, it's in there.

Hearing vs. listening
As per Gregory Winters letter in the Sept. 23 Trinity Journal. Let's start off with the question, is federal-mandated health care constitutional? The answer is nope, but that won't even slow them down. Regarding a very few quotes from President Obama's speech that Mr. Winters heard but did not contemplate.

Just do the right thing
The current controversy over creating a comprehensive health care system is just one symptom of a more profound problem in our country. Most civilized countries have some form of singlepayer health care, i.e. health care that is free for everyone from birth to death.
