Ashes from stove started fire
      A fire in Weaverville on Monday was started by hot ash discarded from a wood stove, Weaverville's interim fire chief said. Fire units from the Weaverville Volunteer Fire Department and Cal Fire responded to the early morning fire on Hawthorne Street. It was initially reported at 3:50 a m. as a vegetation fire threatening structures.

      The following prescribed burns in Trinity County are planned for this fall: . Lower Trinity Ranger District The Lower Trinity Ranger District is planning to conduct prescribed burning on approximately 250 acres this fall, according to District Ranger Bill Rice.

Fire restrictions lifted in Six Rivers forest
      Fire restrictions in the Six Rivers National Forest have been lifted, according to Forest Supervisor Tyrone Kelley. This means visitors may once again have open campfires outside designated campgrounds, provided they possess a valid California campfire permit.

      The Human Response Network Rape Crisis Center's annual sexual assault education class is coming up for profes- sionals, parents, teens and the general public. The 40 hours of training is covered in two three-day weekends — Oct. 23-25 and Nov. 6-8.

Bomb squad called to Trinity
      Unexploded dynamite found in boulders belonging to the Trinity County Road Department was detonated Tuesday, Trinity County Undersheriff Eric Palmer said. A bomb squad from Shasta County traveled to Trinity to detonate the boulders which were located at Reading Creek and the industrial park in Weaverville.

New trash hauler gets green light from supervisors
      Down to only one functioning front loader garbage truck to service eight transfer stations throughout the county, the Trinity County Solid Waste Department obtained emergency approval last week from the Board of Supervisors to purchase a new rig for a total cost of $234,927.

      Joe O'Hara, president of the Willow Creek Fire Safe Council, invites the public to attend more workshops on the Waterman West Integrated Vegetation Management Project. Plenty of walking wounded put emergency agencies to test in simulated bus crash
      Students stagger from a staged school bus accident outside the old Cal Fire building by Lowden Park, at right. The bus crash scene was from a multi-agency drill conducted by Absolute Safety Training, Inc. Twenty-five "victims" took part in the drill held Saturday.

Couple to celebrate 50th anniversary
      Phillip and Margaret Palmer of Lewiston will celebrate 50 years of marriage on Oct. 17. They have been permanent residents of Trinity County since the early 1970s. Phil spent much of his youth in Lewiston in the 1950s with his grandfather, Leon Barsch. Margaret was born in Wyoming and moved to Vallejo, Calif., as a child.

      A girl, Rosalie Noelle, was born to Charlene and Eric Shenk in San Jose on Aug. 25, 2009. She weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces and was 19 inches long. She joins sisters Hanna, 10, and Emma, 7; and brother, Nathan, 4. Maternal grandparents are Hilma Harris and the late Mike Harris of Weaverville. Paternal grandparents are Elaine and Garland Wampler of Sebring, Fla.

Weight challenge to aid mill workers
      Losing big can be a very good thing. On Sept. 30, five teams made up of members of the California Highway Patrol, Trinity County Sheriff's Department, Trinity County District Attorney's office, Trinity County Life Support and Trinity County Behavioral Health met at the Trinity River Lumber mill to "weighin" for a 50-day weight loss challenge.
