A quarter-mile of quilts
     . Saturday morning dawned bright and colorful as crews hung the annual Autumn in the Alps quilt show on Main Street in the historic district of Weaverville. More than 1,500 people stopped to view the display of beautiful quilts in the show hosted by the Thursday Night Strippers Quilt Guild.

11th annual Salmon Festival runs Saturday
      Hook into some fun at the 11th annual Salmon Festival from 9 a m. to 4 p m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Highland Art Center meadow on Weaverville's Main Street. Music, artisans, entertainment, food and great children's activities will all be part of this event for the whole family. Admission is free.

     Weaverville's Bill Marlow shown with his oil painting "Little Barker Creek" which took top honors in the 25th Annual Juried Art Show at the Highland Art Center.       5 Windows Gallery in Weaverville is featuring new works by Debee L. Holland-Olson this month. Her most recent paintings have been centered on the dramatic landscapes of Northern California and the Pacific Coast.

Colorful raffle quilt on display
      The Women's Group of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church has moved its Colorful Quilt to Scott Valley Bank, 234 Main St., Weaverville, where it will be on display for the next month or so. Between now and December, the quilt will be traveling throughout the community for people to see.

      '50s Sock Hop rolls on Saturday Northern Valley Catholic Social Service will be "greasing the wheels" to get the Michael J. Mangas Family Resource Center located in Hayfork rocking and rolling on Saturday, Oct. 10. The fundraising event will commence with a showing of the movie "Grease" at the Trinity Theatre at 1:15 p.m.

Lions, Bugs join clean-up effort
      On a recent Saturday, the Lewiston De-Litter Bugs participated in the Adopt-a-Highway California Cleanup Day 2009 by clearing six bags of trash and three bags of recycling off Highway 299 and Trinity Dam Boulevard.

      Deepest sympathy to Dwight and Gail Glass's family. They were both so community involved and much loved. They will be missed. This seems to be the era for acronyms. Animal Control Officer Christine Edwards has come up with a good one — "GAP FAST" — get a pet for a senior today.

      In view of the current status of our restaurants, or more appropriately the lack of, rattle those pots and pans. This may be a long winter. Our community and our tourists are hoping that someone will step up to the plate and venture into starting an eatery. Our motto is "You cook it and we will eat it, just the way we like it.

LEWISTON SLUICE BOX
      Many thanks to those who supported the Lewiston Sparkies' Octoberfest this past weekend at the old gym. About 100 folks were there, enjoying delicious bratwurst cooked up by Lew Wood and Mel Deardorff. Many of the guests kicked up their heels to the music of the Porch Monkeys. The band members are Bob Quill, Dave Collin, Dave Hahn, Dave Wilcox, Kerry Wagner and Tony Brand.

      National 4-H Week is Oct. 4-10. Nearly six million young people nationwide are enrolled in a 4-H program where they are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. . Grass Valley Creek 4-H Club in Lewiston currently offers the following projects: swine, fly-tying, arts and crafts, calligraphy, and primary member projects.
