We have just returned from a week's vacation staying with my brothers close to Lewiston. Reflecting back on what we witnessed on the date of the Coffin fire. ... We had dropped two rafts (going on an afternoon float) at Rush Creek. We were awaiting the return of my two brothers, Glen and Herb Burton, from a truck rendezvous. More ... I would like to write in response, albeit belatedly, to several recent letters, beginning with those of Mark Potts — in my opinion he couldn't be more correct. Unfortunately, a lot of us tried back in the early 1990s to repeal the 16th Amendment, and from the media attention the movement was getting we thought we were going to pull it off. More ... We want to give a huge thank you to all the firefighters, fire agencies, friends and neighbors who were involved in fighting the fire that started next to our property here in Lewiston. The response time was amazing. It seemed like the Fawn Lodge fire crew was here in minutes but with the terrain and wind there was nothing they could do to stop the fire from spreading. More ... I can see very clearly that from the fire in 2001, and the forest being thinned as a response, has led to an explosion in the number of trails. Both newly created, or just made more accessible. Thus increasing affected areas by three- to four-fold. More ... Well, I see the Michael Vicks of the world have crawled out of their holes again. The article in the paper last week, "Wounded bear mauls bowhunter near Hayfork," confirms it. Shame on you Eric Huff and all of your other soulless buddies. Hunting season, what I call the annual torture of innocent wildlife, is in full swing. More ... In regards to President Obama's health care plan, here is a problem. We have millions of people on socalled SSI and AFDC who receive 100 percent medical, dental and vision for free, while the working family still struggles to pay bills, and any medical bills they may incur. More ... In a spotlighted letter by Herk Shriner on Aug. 12, a key word was left out in the typing of his letter. It was a small word, "the," but it changed the meaning of his letter. The full term he used, forever in the black, would have meant the firefighters were safe for eternity. Forever in black has another meaning altogether. More ... |
