Businesses, unlocked cars targeted by thieves
      A spate of burglaries and thefts hit Weaverville over the past week. In many cases unlocked vehicles were targeted. Items taken from the vehicles ranged from spare change to expensive camera equipment. In a burglary to a business, Trinideli was hit two days in a row, losing food, alcohol, a satellite radio and change.

I-5 median barrier going in
      Caltrans District 2 officials remind motorists that the cable median barrier project on Interstate 5 in Anderson and Redding is well under way. Crews have begun the process of stretching the three-quarter-inch cables. Each spun steel cable has a test strength of 35,000 pounds and works by catching errant vehicles and redirecting them.

Hyampom crash injures 3
      A Hyampom man suffered serious injuries in a crash and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Aug. 19. The California Highway Patrol said Timothy Tucker, 43, of Hyampom was driving northbound north of Hyampom Road on Lower South Fork Road that afternoon at 80 miles per hour when he rear-ended another vehicle.

Motorcycle rider injured
      A motorcycle rider was taken to a Redding hospital with minor head injuries after an accident on Highway 3 south of Rattlesnake Road Saturday afternoon. The CHP said Theo- dore Timmons, 30, of Oregon was riding southbound at an unknown speed when he entered a right curve and apparently hit a spot of diesel fuel in the lane.

Continuing education for psychotherapists
      Joan Pechanec, a licensed clinical social worker, will present "Thoughts from the Therapists Chair," a two-hour continuing education training from 6 to 8 p m. Thursday, Sept. 24. She will speak from her 40 years of experience as a psychotherapist, including 35 years of private practice in Oakland, Redding and Mount Shasta.

Job numbers still dismal
     There’s no sign that the job market in Trinity County is improving yet, according to the latest unemployment figures released by the California Employment Development Department showing a 17.5 percent jobless rate for the county in July.

HRN Shoe Fund seeks a boost
      It's a small thing, a pair of shoes, that can make such a big difference in a kid's life. The Human Response Network Shoe Fund buys school shoes for children of low-income families, and since January 2006 it can account for 741 pairs of shoes and grinning Trinity County school kids.

New program to focus on respite beds for mental health needs
      The state has identified a new pot of money that Trinity County Behavioral Health Services may apply for in fiscal year 2009-10. The state has allocated $70,000 from Proposition 63, the voter-passed initiative from November 2004, for projects in the county considered innovative.

Public mental health services scholarship available
      Individuals interested in pursuing a career in the public mental health field are invited to apply for a scholarship worth up to $5,000 that will be awarded in fall 2009 by Trinity County Behavioral Health Services. The scholarship application deadline is Sept. 30.

      Challenge Days needs adult volunteers Volunteers are needed to help with Challenge Days coming up Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 2 and 3 in Weaverville. Each day, about 100 high school students will attend the program meant to prevent bullying and harassment and break down cliques and racism. The morning will begin with ice breakers and fun activities.
