Better approach to universal health care than current plans

FROM RUSS GRINER WEAVERVILLE

I can hardly believe the B.S. coming out of Washington! Today I hear that in order to have a national health program it'll cost the U.S. taxpayer anywhere from one trillion on up to three trillion to only cover about a third of the population. Just how dumb do they really think we are? Does anyone know just how many millions there are in a trillion? How about in just a billion?

Think in terms of this, there is about 300 million people in the United States and if the government placed, at birth, in your Personal Health Account (PHA), one million dollars to be used only by you in the course of your lifetime for any needed health matters, annual checkups, any necessary health procedures — but not elective or cosmetic, those options would be paid by the patients themselves. And when you're ready to retire the balance of your PHA, the part that you hadn't used up could be used as a supplement to your Social Security doled out to help keep up with inflation. At no time would the citizen ever be able to extract cash from the Personal Health Account. Bills would come from the attending doctor or approved medical facility and paid by the government at whatever rate they charge within certain guidelines and limitations.

Rather than having some huge fat-cat governmental medical czar running the show, these funds would stay in the Social Security control with no one being able to borrow them for highways, bridge projects or roads to nowhere which seem to be in favor now days. The daily interest on all those millions alone could help pay down the national debt.

Some would say that this favors only the newborn in this country, but as I see it we're all helping to keep this country going and we all deserve the benefit of this country's riches. So everyone who reaches 50 years of age would be entitled to a PHA with $500,000 that should last most of us humans for the rest of our lives and all those under 50 would get the full amount placed in their account. These would be the figures at start-up and could be fine-tuned for new citizens and perhaps political refugees. This would require the total closing of our borders and unless you are a citizen you would not be in titled to a PHA. No matter what. All charitable organizations should be able to step in and cover these other needs since most of the pressure would be off of the rest of us now that we'll be covered.

To help with the start-up of these accounts it would also require the end to all foreign aid for five years; it's well past time for all other governments to start supporting the corrupt governments of the world. Uncle Sam just doesn't need to keep giving our wealth to countries that resent us and are more than willing to turn on us if they think it just might get them a few billion more to calm them down.

The bottom line would be:

1. All Americans would be covered at a lot less than the trillions the government and special interest groups want to charge us, and you could still pay for private health coverage if you want to, it'll just be out of your own pocket but there'd not really be a need for it.

2. The borders would be closed and Homeland Security could go back to sleep.

3. Math teachers would be put back to work teaching people just how many millions there are in a trillion.

4. Doctors would still be able to afford their Caddies, Beemers and Volvos.

5. And the government could go back to running this country into the ground.
