Lightning storm sparks several small fires Lightning storm sparks several small fires Widespread storms Wednesday, July 1, produced at least 380 lightning strikes across Northern California beginning about 2 p.m. and lasting until late evening. On the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, seven fires were detected, attacked and contained. The Buck, Union and Thompson Fires were suppressed in the headwaters of the Trinity River about eight miles northwest of Coffee Creek. All were estimated at one-tenth acre in size. About five miles west of Siskiyou Lake, the Toad Fire was contained at approximately one acre. The Allen Fire, about five miles south of Burnt Ranch and the Little Fire about five miles northwest of Hyampom were suppressed at one-tenth acre each. Five engines, one dozer and one hand crew were required to fight the Toad Fire, and several engines suppressed the Memorial Fire. The rest burned in remote inaccessible terrain, and were attacked by smokejumpers and rappellers from the Redding airbase. Additional smokejumpers were brought in from Redmond, Ore., to help attack any additional fires.
Also on Wednesday, engines and hand crews from the Six Rivers National Forest, CalFire, Salyer and Hawkins Bar Volunteer Fire Department and Hoopa Fire responded to several fires north and south of Hawkins Bar caused by lightning from afternoon thunderstorms.
Ten fires were located in the Lower Trinity Ranger District and staffed through the evening and four were contained. No structures were threatened.
Fire operations required helicopter air support from a staging area next to Highway 299 in Hawkins Bar.
“This morning (Thursday) we found four new fires and crews responded and contained two of them,” said Mike Beasley, new fire management officer at Lower Trinity Ranger District. “The other two are located in the Ferguson Meadow area of the Trinity Alps Wilderness next to the Shasta Trinity National Forest. These two fires have been staffed with smokejumpers and helicopter repellers.”
