Looking for a home
      Jake is an 11-month-old male Labrador retriever/ rottweiler with a bob tail available for adoption at the Trinity County Animal Shelter. There are also lots of kittens. Call ACO Christine Edwards at 623-1370. Hours for the shelter at the end of Mountain View Street are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Kids reel 'em in
      Youngsters Elissa and Riet Penn show off their fish during the Kids Free Fish Day held last Saturday at Pine Cove Marina on Lewiston Lake. Sponsored by the Lewiston Lions Club, the event was a huge success. More than 80 kids under age 12 fished the cove that was stocked that morning with 3,500 trout (thanks to the California Department of Fish and Game).

New dentist opens in Weaver
      There's a new dentist setting up shop in Weaverville and accepting new patients as of Monday, June 15. Frederick Reese Carlin Jr., 61, has recently located here from Lehi, Utah, where he had intended to retire two years ago after selling his 28- year-old dental practice in Laguna Hills.

Zulueta-Nielsen wedding
      Julius Ceasar Zulueta and Cassandra Rose Nielsen were married June 10, 2009, in Weaverville. The bride is the daughter of John Warren of Medford, Ore., and the late Tammy Nielsen. The groom is the son of Angela Guererro of Massachusetts (formerly of Hawaii) and Ceasar Zulueta of Kalihi, Hawaii. The newlyweds are 2008 graduates of Alps View High School.

      A new chick has been added to the Taylor Henhouse! Avery Brielle was born at 3:38 a.m. June 10, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Redding. She weighed 7 pounds, 12.2 ounces and was 21 inches long. She joins her two big sister chicks Riley and Ava, and parents Bryan and Shannon Taylor of Weaverville. Paternal grandparents are Bob and Laura Taylor of Weaverville.

Help with fire hazard reduction
      Weaverville-area residents will have the opportunity for low-cost abatement of wildfire dangers under a new program that will also see youth trained in firefighting. Scott Alvord, interim chief of the Weaverville Fire Department, announced the Hazard Reduction Program, funded by federal stimulus grants administered by the Weaverville SMART Center.

      The Lewiston Traveling Pinochle Club met June 11 at the home of Lee Springs. Winners were Dave Rhody, first prize; Gordon Westerby, second; and Ann Jordan, third. The double pinochle prize was won by Ann Jordan. The club will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 25, at the home of Barbara Thiessen.

      A good friend heard his fire radio at night recently and woke up to find it was his house that was burning. They lost everything. This can be very close to home in our community. We are now officially entering the new fire season and all burn permits are canceled. Who and what do we have close at hand for protection?

      On June 10 many citizens of Junction City attended the wildfire meeting at the community center. Pat Frost and Alex Cousins led the meeting and answered many questions from the crowd. Bob Winkler and Jack Eggleston were there to field questions. The focus of the meeting was wildfires.

      If this weather keeps up we may have to rethink our tourism advertising as Trinity County is transformed into a tropical paradise — sans an ocean! Some residents have complained that they're getting moldy; others are enjoying the milder temperatures. But most agree it's nice to see beautiful green grasses that are usually faded to pale yellow and tan by now.

      Sunday services at Coffee Creek Community Church were both joyous and somber as 80-year-old Pastors Fred and Roberta Boring officiated their final Sunday service. Seven years ago, Fred and Roberta took the helm of CCCC. They thought they retired at that time, but a higher power had other plans for them. During the past seven years Fred and Roberta made many friends.
