Earth oven construction workshop in Weaver A free hands-on workshop on how to construct an outdoor oven from earthen materials will be held June 20 at the Young Family Ranch in Weaverville. Everyone is welcome. Work on the oven will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a great opportunity to learn about alternative building practices and basics of cob construction while building an earth oven perfect for baking bread and pizza. Cob is a simple mixture of clay, sand and straw, similar to adobe, and can be used in many garden construction projects and even for building homes. A nutrition workshop the same day will focus on baking breads and will demonstrate the effectiveness of solar ovens while the cob oven is being constructed. Bread making and baking will occur from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The historic Young Family Ranch is a community trust property located at 260 Oregon St. Young Family Ranch Inc. is a nonprofit entity that works in partnership with the Trinity Trust and the Humboldt Area Foundation to ensure long-term benefit to the residents of Trinity County. Both activities are part of the Young Family Ranch Healthful Foods and Family Gardening Workshop series, provided through a collaboration of the Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention Council, the University of California Cooperative Extension Nutrition Education Program, Young Family Ranch, Inc., and the Trinity County Resource Conservation District.
