Fatal off-road crash
      A Fort Jones man died of injuries after his motorcycle crashed into a ravine at the north end of Trinity Lake on Friday, the California Highway Patrol said. Joshua J. Farmer, 30, had been riding the Suzuki motorcycle in an area of the lake which is normally underwater but is used by offroad vehicles when the lake is low.

Trinity alumni new CHP officers
      Whitney Taylor and Jesse Brookins of Weaverville have successfully completed California Highway Patrol cadet training. She is assigned to duty at the CHP's Santa Barbara area office. He is assigned to duty at the CHP's Alturas area office.

Sheriff's Report
      The Trinity County Sheriff's Department received the following calls from May 18 to 24: May 18 Subject who appears to be "strung out" outside a Lewiston residence at 12:20 a.m. An arrest is made. Abandoned boat reported to have been sunk at Trinity Lake by the dam. Officer finds it is partly in the water and the owner has agreed to remove it.

Caltrans road work ahead
      Caltrans has scheduled the following road projects through Friday, May 29: • On Highway 3, from 4.9 miles south of the south Highway 299 junction to 0.2 miles north of the north Highway 299 junction, Weaverville, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday, pavement work. There will be one-way traffic control with up to 10-minute delays.

Road work on Indian Valley Road
      The Shasta-Trinity National Forest will begin a fog seal and striping project on June 1. Areas affected by the project include Forest Road 2N10, also known as Indian Valley Road. Work will be starting at the intersection of Forest Road 2N10 and 3N08 and continue for 10.5 miles on Indian Valley Road.

Chasing grants for Hayfork public safety building
      Hopes that $1.3 million in federal stimulus funding would provide a major boost to a planned public safety building in Hayfork were dashed when volunteers who have worked hard on the project found out the money awarded was more loan than grant.

$1.2 million loan to aid hospital
      Mountain Communities Healthcare District directors plan to consolidate the district's past due bills and reduce interest costs with a $1.2 million loan from Umpqua Bank. They approved the twoyear loan agreement with Umpqua at their last regular board meeting on May 20.

Poor market stymies salvage near Junction City
      Plans for salvage logging on 155 acres of burned U.S. Forest Service land near Junction City and Big Bar have been scrapped for economic reasons, District Ranger Lance Koch said.

Bonomini praised as 'team player'
      After a career of 31 years with Trinity County, wearing so many hats it is hard to keep track of them all, Director of Transportation Carl Bonomini is retiring at the end of this week to spend more time working on his ranch in Hayfork.

Early a.m. fire destroys J.C. house
      A Junction City residence burned to the ground early Tuesday morning. The fire on River Acres Road in Coopers Bar was reported around 2:45 a.m., said Junction City Fire Chief Jack Eggleston. The couple inside escaped. The Junction City and Weaverville fire departments responded along with Cal Fire.

Forest pot farms a risk to hikers
      As the summer approaches, the marijuana cultivation season is beginning and it is especially important for people to be aware of their surroundings on national forests. More than 7 million plants have been seized off California National Forest System lands since 2003. Marijuana growers will be active on the national forests from now until usually the end of October.
