Lightning sparks small fires (breaking)
Thursday's thunderstorms did spark fires in the Hayfork area and Southern Trinity, but they are small and crews are working on them, a Shasta-Trinity National Forest spokesman said Friday.
The North State experienced more than 900 lightning strikes the evening of May 28, starting four fires in the Shasta-Trinity, said Kent Romney, public affairs officer for the forest.
The Corral Fire near the Indian Valley Guard Station, approximately 10 miles west of Hayfork, is a quarter-acre. Crews have it controlled, Romney said in an interview Friday afternoon.
The Donaldson Fire about four miles northeast of Hayfork was contained at a half-acre. Crews were on scene working it and expected it to be under control by the end of the day, Romney said.
The quarter-acre Wilson Fire, six miles west of Platina, was fully contained.
The West Fire was discovered Friday just north of the Yolla Bolly Wilderness and crews are working on it, Romney said Friday afternoon. Information on the size was not available, but Romney said it also was a small fire.
"Our lookouts are in place and we are having aerial recognizance done on a daily basis, and no additional fires were detected today," Romney said.
More lightning is expected for the next four to seven days, Romney said, adding that on the positive side more precipitation is expected along with it.
However, he said, "It's important to note we're getting this activity in May and things are hotter and drier than they typically are this time of year. We have potential for a long fire season."
