Quilt show meeting
      The first planning meeting for the 2009 Autumn in the Alps Quilt Show will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at the Chamber of Commerce Office in Weaverville. This outdoor quilt show, which brings hundreds of visitors to Weaverville from across the West, is scheduled for Oct. 3.

HHS graduation
      Hayfork High School's 25 graduating seniors will receive their diplomas this Friday, May 29, at a commencement ceremony starting at 7:30 p.m. at the high school's Ernie Glass Field. There will be speeches by Salutatorians William Byrne and Sidney Russell, and by Valedictorian Brittany Stewart.

      A Fire Safe Junction City community meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the Junction City Community Center. Topics include funding to fire-safe private property, help setting priorities for the work, and what you can do now. Refreshments will be served.

      Soroptimist International of Trinity County honored five outstanding women in the community on May 7 at an awards banquet held at Marino's restaurant. The mission of Soroptimist International is to improve the lives of women and girls.

      Douglas City Elementary School presented "School House Rock Live Jr." on Thursday and Friday evening at the Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center. From start to finish in this oneact musical, 10 "enthusiastic" young talents put on a show that was both entertaining and lively.

Trinity Trust awards youth program grants
      The Advisory Committee of The Trinity Trust has awarded $9,200 in Summer Youth Mini-Grants to more than 20 programs serving 2,400 children and teens in Trinity County. Despite the difficult economic times, the committee voted unanimously to award $1,600 more this year than they did in 2008.

'Colorful Quilt' to be raffled by church
      The Women's Group of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church has moved its Colorful Quilt to Textile Traditions quilt shop in Weaverville, on the corner of highways 3 and 299, where it will be on display for the next month. The double-size quilt is hand-embroidered, handquilted and cross-stitched.

      Weaverville Church of the Nazarene celebrated Mother's Day by honoring several local women. Recognized with the Community Best Mom Award were Patty Hymas of Weaverville, Bobbie Graham of Coffee Creek and Cheryl Yacuob of Junction City.

      A book signing for Janet LaPierre, author of "Run a Crooked Mile," will be held from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. this coming Saturday at Budman's Book Mine in Weaverville. "Run a Crooked Mile," by Janet LaPierre, is a quick read that will appeal to Trinity County residents with its frequent references to Trinity County places.

An evening of music
      Los Angeles musician Janet Robin will be appearing at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center in Weaverville for an evening of acoustic music. The show is part of a short West Coast run following her March East Coast and current Czech Republic tours. Tickets are $12 (advance) or $15 at the door.

Photography at 5 Windows
      The month of June brings the work of Washington artist Richard Lewis to 5 Windows Gallery in Weaverville. Lewis has been making pictures for about 25 years, mostly with a variety of cameras including some that are homemade. He taught photography at Seattle University for 10 years and at Cornish College of the Arts and the Photographic Center Northwest.

Tax helpers
      Thanks to the help of five volunteers and staff, the Human Response Network's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site e-filed 202 tax returns this tax season. Eighty of them qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit, bringing $122,324 of EIC dollars into Trinity County.

      The month of May is always a sad and reflective time for me. It is the month my father was born and in May he died. It is the month for Mother's Day. I held my mommy's hand and sat with her while she died. On a positive note I want to share with you what my father wrote before his death. He wrote 22 books -- all were published.

A Senior's View
      I hope you all had as wonderful a Memorial Day weekend as I did. My son, Richard Talvola, and his wife, Jean, from Burlingame, visited. They stayed at their favorite place, The Weaverville Hotel. They took me to dinner both nights at La Grange. We were greeted, as usual, by owner Sharron Heryford. Jill, our waitress, did her usual efficient and cheerful job.

      I'm an aide at Coffee Creek Elementary School and one of the perks is going on field trips. Last Friday we met with Medal of Honor recipient James Taylor at the Coffee Creek/Trinity Center Cemetery to put flags on the graves of veterans to honor them for Memorial Day. Afterward, Taylor treated us for lunch at the Mini Kat.

      By now, you have probably seen Eric Savaard around town, leading his new baby mule. Xyn, pronounced zen, was born on May 3 to mother Mama Dolly and father Zipper. Zipper himself has since passed away and Eric is not sure why, but he suspects that Mama Dolly kicked his "ass"!

      Mary Trancho is the first woman president of the Weaverville Lions Club. Mary lives on the line bordering Lewiston, a drive off of Lewiston Road. The Lions celebrated their 50th anniversary on May 9 at the Veterans Memorial Hall with guests including the governor of Lions Northern California. The founding father of the Weaverville Lions Club, Dave Jensen, attended.

Courthouse garden makeover
     Trinity Garden Club members, with the help of volunteers and trustees, recently replanted the entryway to the Trinity County Courthouse in one day. This included rock paths, weed cloth, bark, drip irrigation and plants. Trinity Nursery donated a Paul's Scarlet Hawthorne. A white dogwood and a pale pink Rose of Sharon along with many shrubs and perennials completed the restoration.

      There will be a short litter pickup this Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Meet at the pavilion in the Lewiston Community Park. Vests, grabbers and bags will be provided. Let's get our town looking good for Peddlers' Faire, which is the following weekend, June 6.

Lions meeting
      The Lewiston Lions Club will hold its social/business meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at the Lewiston Community Center on Texas Avenue. This will be a potluck dinner, so bring an entree, salad or dessert to share. The agenda includes discussion of the Kids Free Fish Day on June 13 at the Pine Grove Marina.

Red Cross volunteers needed
      The Trinity County Red Cross Disaster Action Teams are in dire need of additional members. When a shelter is opened, it is manned 24 hours a day with a minimum of two volunteers at a time. The Red Cross also helps families when there is a residential fire.

Safe senior driving class
      AARP Senior Driver Safety Class is scheduled for June 3 and 4 at the Trinity P.U.D. meeting room at 26 Ponderosa Lane. The classes will begin at 8 a.m. and end at noon each day. The class fee is $14 with a $2 discount for AARP members.

Southern Trinity 4-H Club
      Our 4-H Club traveled to Zenia for the county field day on April 25, hosted by Zenia 4-H Club. We had a really fun day learning about different animals. Tim Hurts from Covelo gave us a lecture on what the beef industry is looking for in a beef project. Correct feeding is the most important along with working with your animal.

      The Grass Valley Creek 4- H Club will be having its annual car wash and bake sale at Longs/CVS parking lot on Saturday, June 13, to raise funds for the Trinity County Animal Shelter. The club will also be holding a Pizza Take Over Night at Round Table Pizza in Weaverville from 5 to 8 p.m. June 11 to raise funds for the Trinity County 4-H Council.
