Sheriff's Report
      The Trinity County Sheriff's Department received the following calls from Feb. 17 to 22: Feb. 17 Report of vandalism to Trinity Little League field. Unknown suspect tore and broke items to make a shelter, camp and fire pit in one of the rodeo horse chutes.

Allegations of attempted murder, rape
      A Los Angeles man has been arrested on attempted murder and rape charges in an incident that allegedly occurred in Hyampom, the Trinity County Sheriff's Department said. Carlos Antonio Lopez, 26, was visiting relatives in Hyampom when he met the woman, Sheriff's Sgt. Don Richer said.

Board of Supervisors ponder new fees
      It may soon cost more to license a dog, access certain library services and develop property in Trinity County as the board of supervisors considers a variety of proposed county fee increases at its meetings in March. First up for the March 3 meeting will be proposed increases for animal control and library services.

      The Trinity River Restoration Program's new executive director has a lot of experience in balancing competing water needs. Mike Hamman comes to the restoration program after working since 1994 developing water resources for the state of New Mexico, city of Santa Fe and the Jicarilla Apache Nation.

      Weaverville-based Internet provider Velocity Technology Cooperative has teamed up with Broadband Associates of Sacramento on a $19.6 million project to bring broadband Internet to many communities along Highway 299 in Trinity County and beyond.

      The Forest Service has welcomed Bill Rice as the new Lower Trinity district ranger. He replaces Ann Garland who retired on Jan. 3. For the past four years Rice served as district ranger for the Orleans Ranger District.

      Tree death rates have more than doubled over the last few decades in old-growth forests of the western United States, and the most probable cause of the worrisome trend is regional warming, according to a U.S. Geological Survey led (USGS) study published in Science on Jan. 23.

Aanestad, Chesbro react to budget
      Trinity County's representatives in the state Legislature reacted to the package of bills used to close California's budget gap. Sen. Sam Aanestad, RGrass Valley, voted against the state budget that passed the Senate early last Thursday morning. He fears the tax hikes will cost California thousands of jobs.
