Lewiston Sluice Box

By KATIE QUINN (530) 778-3307 katieq@com-pair.net

It is with a sad heart that I tell you that funeral services for Bev Shoffner of Pine Cove will be held this Saturday, Feb. 28, in Redding at the Bethel Church, 933 College View Drive. Bev passed away Feb. 17 from pancreatic cancer. Bev and her husband, Frank, have lived in Lewiston for a number of years. They have been great supporters of the Trinity County Relay for Life. Bev was a lively lady, with a great smile and good cheer for all. She will be greatly missed. A local memorial service will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the home of Mel Deardorff and Katie Quinn, 330 River Rock Road. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o the Trinity County Relay for Life, P.O. Box 756, Lewiston, CA 96052.

This Friday is the last day for our wonderful, friendly, helpful Postmistress Debbie Van Matre. Debbie is retiring after six years at the Lewiston Post Office, 25 years in all working for the U.S. Post Office. Her replacement will be Mary Elliott, currently working at the post office in Old Shasta. If you get a chance this week, poke your head in and wish Debbie good luck on her retirement. Oh, and her husband, Richard, who works at the Douglas City PO, is making Friday his last day of employment. Yahoo - here comes retirement!

The Lewiston Sparkies will hold their regular monthly meeting at 3 p.m. next Monday, March 2, at the Lewiston Community Center. All members are encouraged to attend and guests are welcome.

Next Wednesday, March 4, is the monthly meeting of the Lewiston Garden Club. Frank Tona, owner of Crown Camera, will be on hand to tell members how to take better photographs in their garden. Come to the Lewiston Community Center on Texas Avenue around 12:30 p.m. There will be social time until 1 p.m., then the presentation. Contact club President Barbara Bailey at 623-2163 for more information.

Also on Wednesday is the regular monthly meeting of the Lewiston Community Services District at 7 p.m. The LCSD oversees the Lewiston Community Park and the Lewiston Fire Department. Guests are encouraged.

Plans are underway for the 2009 Trinity County Relay for Life, to be held Sept. 12 and 13 at the Weaverville Elementary School track. If you are interested in helping with Relay and the fight against cancer, contact me at 778- 3307. Even though we are in rough economic times, cancer does not take a break. If you cannot donate financially, maybe you could help at the event. Even if you cannot walk on a team, maybe you could play Bunco for 24 hours near the track. There really is something for everyone - call me and let's talk. Let's make a difference!

Happy birthdays to John Osborn, owner of the Lewiston Inn, and to Daniel Michel, both on Feb. 28; Richard Sharp, Joe Lester and Rena Birt, all on March 2. Hope you get just the kind of cake and ice cream you really like!
