30 years of service at hospital
      Thirty years ago David Beans was challenged to find a ministry outside of the church he attended. David went to the Trinity Hospital and started singing and visiting the patients. Sometimes he sang by himself and sometimes he had help but for 30 years he has been faithful to this ministry.

Miller new college trustee
      The Shasta College District Governing Board last week named Duane K. Miller to a provisional appointment for Trustee Area B, which includes parts of Cottonwood and Anderson. Miller took office Feb. 18 and will serve until the November 2009 election.

Local kids winners at logging conference expo
      Trinity County high school students took home top honors from two different contests held in conjunction with the Sierra Cascade Logging Conference Exposition Feb. 12-14 in Anderson. Both events were coordinated by the Natural Resources Department at Shasta College and included an FFA Forestry Contest and the My Forest Logging History competition.

      Jacob Hunter Wiechman was born to Ben and Erika Wiechman of Redding on Jan. 8, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center. He weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. He was welcomed by big brother Colton. His maternal grandparents are Kyle and Deb Schoenthaler of Redding, and great-grandparents are Juanita Schoenthaler of Weaverville and Donald Anondson of Redding.

Blacksmith Hammer-In
      The Trinity County Historical Society will host the 12th annual Weaverville Blacksmith Hammer-in March 6, 7 and 8. Metalworking demonstrations and workshops begin each day at 9 a.m. at the Jake Jackson Museum. Tinsmith Bill Brown of Sacramento will demonstrate the use of the museum's collection of circa-1870 tin "machines.

Religious film 'Fireproof' to be shown
      Faith Assembly of God, Hayfork Community Church and Solid Rock Church invite the public to a free movie event at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Critser Hall in Hayfork. We will be showing the movie "Fireproof" starring Kirk Cameron. This movie is about relationships and family. It addresses restoration of marriage and dealing with addictions. Refreshments will be provided.

Community help sought for clean-up
      A Weaverville contractor has volunteered his labor and equipment to clean up the remains of a home that burned in December. He's asking for the community's help with out-of-pocket expenses. Two months after the fire, the burned remains of the home that Carol Bishop lived in are still at the site on South Miner Street near the Weaverville Post Office.

Scholarships available for THS alumni
      Trinity Scholarship Foundation is accepting applications for its upper-division scholarships. Applicants must be Trinity High School graduates who have completed at least 56 college units and will be enrolled in the 2009-2010 school year on a full-time basis. Graduate students may also apply.

      Off-duty firefighters from Douglas City and other local fire departments and agencies will be shaking their turnout boots and collecting donations to help "Fill the Boot for Burns" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in Weaverville at the Tops Super Foods entrance and also on Highway 299 in front of the market.

HRN offers scholarship
      The Human Response Network scholarship application process is open until April 7. The $500 scholarship is offered to a high school senior, continuing education or re-entry student who will be pursuing a career in early childhood education or social services.

Golden Age Center News
      We have three exciting fundraisers coming up at the Golden Age Center. Marathon Bingo, postponed from the 21st, will occur on Feb. 28. Bingo will run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Food will be available for purchase. On Friday, March 6, the Soroptimists are conducting a Bunko night at the center. Bunko is a great game of dice, and there is money to be won!

      Leah Groves of East Fork won the local competition of the California Lions 72nd Student Speaker Contest on Feb. 12. Leah now moves on to the zone level in March, representing the Trinity Lake Lions Club. Leah and Jaycee Journey, both Trinity High School students and graduates of Coffee Creek School, gave speeches at the Weaverville competition.

      It is with a sad heart that I tell you that funeral services for Bev Shoffner of Pine Cove will be held this Saturday, Feb. 28, in Redding at the Bethel Church, 933 College View Drive. Bev passed away Feb. 17 from pancreatic cancer. Bev and her husband, Frank, have lived in Lewiston for a number of years. They have been great supporters of the Trinity County Relay for Life.

      A Peace Corps volunteer will share experiences and photographs at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Mamma Llama Coffeehouse in downtown Weaverville. There is no charge. Mike McMillan served with the Peace Corps in Fiji 2003-2005. He's a former Trinity County planner, firefighter, ambulance manager and deputy sheriff. He is now building his home near Covington Mill.

      The Lewiston Lions Club will hold its social/ business meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Lewiston Community Center on Texas Avenue. As the River Flows
      Linda Brown and the Boyz, shooting pool for the Hayfork Hotel, came over here on Sunday to take on the Hyampom Bar and Cafe's Alternuts! The 'Nuts held their own, though, and ended with a score of 10-5. The other team brought the cheering section with them. And it was a good one; they were rooting for both sides. They also brought the food - Indian tacos.

SMACK collecting
      The Human Response Network's annual SMACK campaign takes place during February of every year. Businesses throughout the county are displaying donation cans with red lips (The Only SMACK Your Kid Will Ever Need) and SHOES on the labels. All of the donated money buys shoes for school-age children from low-income families in Trinity County.

      Trinity County is home to many fine artists. More than half of them do not live in the populous county seat but have made their homes and studios in the picturesque rural areas. During the month of March, the Main Street Gallery in Weaverville will be featuring the art works of only those artists living outside the borders of the town of Weaverville.

      I am the new reporter for the Southern Trinity 4- H Club. We have been very busy already this year. First we had to elect new officers, then go to our Officers Training Day in Hayfork on Nov. 1. We were the host for this event, so all the planning was up to us. We want to thank the Six Rivers Lions for the money to pay for lunch.
