Golden Age Center News

By HOLLY ANDERSON

If you ever wondered about how the Silent Auction is conducted, here is the scoop. Every two weeks, on the first and 15th of each month, a lovely and gracious volunteer, June Black (you would most likely find her on the golf course during warmer days), picks out the items to be placed on the auction tables. She selects from a collection that has been deemed as "special" by Blue Barn volunteers from goods that have been donated to the barn.

Some of the items placed in the Silent Auction have been specifically given to the center for that purpose. If one really likes something in the auction and has decided that their existence would be bleak without it, that person can place a bid. They simply write down their name and phone number on the paper by the item and a dollar amount they want to bid, providing of course, that it is higher than the previous bid. If another higher bid is subsequently placed, one can go back and up the amount again. The last and highest bid after two weeks wins that can't-live-without item and the Golden Age Center contacts the lucky winner. Then the process begins again with entirely new items. Can anyone bid, say like a young worker at one of our many Weaverville businesses? You betcha! And, thank you, June Black for your unfailing efforts and devotion to the center.

As a gentle reminder, the center will be offering only one meal seating beginning Jan. 5. Lunch will be served at noon with the traditionally scrumptious and nutritious meals prepared by Tina West and Ginger Sargent. And we cannot forget Lorie Giassullo who keeps your plates and utensils squeaky clean.
