Golden Age Center News
      The final day of operation of Blue Barn II will be Saturday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. We are running special sales of $1 a bag through the closing date. Blue Barn I will continue to be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are still in need of volunteers for the manning of Blue Barn I.

As the River Flows
      The Farmer's Market has been really hopping the last couple of weeks. The produce is starting to come in now, plus there are other good things to eat out there, and everybody wants some. Besides all of the other good things that come from the garden, we have had our first taste of this year's homegrown tomatoes. Now that's what we're talking about!

Scholarship recipient
     The Weaverville Business and Professional Women awarded their annual scholarship to Melisa Jessee of Hayfork. Jessee, center, accepts a check from BPW members Mary Lynn Rounds (left) and Carol Bethke. The scholarship is awarded to a woman from Trinity County who is pursuing a career goal by attending college or graduate school. Jessee is completing a master's program in social work at Humboldt State University. While taking classes there, she has shown dedication to her community by completing her internship and working at Hayfork High School. Upon graduation, Jessee plans to seek employment in Hayfork.

Hayfork Valley News
      The Junior Livestock Show and Auction will still be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at the fairgrounds. Because of the terrible fires, the Trinity County Fair had to be canceled this year.

Junction City Monitor
      Well, this past week was definitely a time of hope and fear but wonderful conclusions. Our nephew, Dean Violet, has been waiting for a lung transplant in intensive care in the U.C. San Francisco hospital for a little over three months. The last month, he had a trach in his throat and was unable to speak.

     Jim and Lynne Gervasi of Weaverville announced the engagement of their daughter, Victoria Gervasi, to Tyler Geist, son of Edith and Paul Geist of Old Shasta. They plan to wed in June 2009.

A Senior's View
      My son, John W. Payne, and grandson, Sam G. Payne, arrived from Purcellville, Va., Saturday, Aug. 9. They flew to the Bay Area Friday, staying all night with my daughterin law, Charlotte Payne. After renting a car, they drove up the coastal route, Highway 101, so Sam could see the redwoods.

New gardens at Milestones drop-in center
      Milestones, the mental health drop-in center in Weaverville, has built a garden which will provide its patrons with healthy and nutritious food choices. The project started in early 2008 with a vision of raised beds, abundant squash and ripe red tomatoes. The Milestones Garden Committee decided on an ambitious 400- square-foot, raised-bed plan.

Trinity's Lively Arts
      There was an extra performance of "Ruthless! The Musical" on Sunday, Aug. 17, so I went for the third time. It was the best of all three. Sylvia (Michael Martens) was in rare form. Her vocal numbers like "She's got Talent" were done with all the nuances of a Rex Harrison and Roz Russell.

Christian school registration
      The Hayfork Seventh-day Adventist Christian School, the only operating Christian school in Trinity County, will be holding registration on Thursday, Aug. 21, beginning at 7 p.m. Christian education will be provided for children from grades one through eight.

Hayfork 4-H to display projects
      The Hayfork Timberjacks 4-H club will have a Project Display Day August 31, 1:30 to 3 p.m., at the Hayfork Youth Center. The Timberjacks' 4-H enrollment meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Youth Center. For informaiton, contact Kathy or Dennis Johnson at 628-4221.

Watercolors at Highland
      Two of Trinity County's top watercolor artists, Karen Hammer and Evelyn Ward, will be the featured artists at the Highland Art Center for the month of September. A reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. during the Weaverville Art Cruise to welcome the public and offer refreshments and wine. The event is free.

'Fair Day' is planned
      A downscaled "Fair Day" is in planning to help make up for the cancellation of this year's Trinity County Fair, said Fair Manager Jerry Fulton. Fulton said a date has not been set, but the one-day event is likely to be held at the end of September or the beginning of October.

Bill aims at scams used on seniors
      The state Senate last week approved a bill by Patty Berg that makes it harder for unscrupulous financial advisors to win the confidence of California's elderly population. Assembly Bill 2149, which was approved on a 26-9 vote, would rein in a gimmick used by sales people where they claim to be "senior experts" offering advice, rather than sales people.

Bigfoot Days events in Willow Creek
      Bigfoot Days will be celebrated in Willow Creek on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. along Highway 299 in downtown Willow Creek. The theme is "Year of the Bigfoot. Seeing is Believing!" The grand marshal is Mr. Bigfoot himself, Al Hodgson.

Church benefit concert planned to fight cancer
      The Weaverville Church of the Nazarene will hold a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Lee Fong Park Amphitheater to raise money to fight cancer. Ray Benesh and the Yuba City Nazarene Band will perform classic rock, country and worship songs. The Weaverville Church of the Nazarene Band will perform rock/contemporary Christian music.

      Sonya Edwards, a Sacramento bead artist, will show students how to transform a simple pendant into a work of art as they create a macramé pendant tassel. The class will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, from noon to 3 p.m. Angela's Bead Art in downtown Weaverville is providing the space and offering some materials. 'Doors' tribute band to perform
      Some people may get a feeling of deja vu when Wild Child, the Los Angeles-based tribute band for The Doors, takes the stage in Hayfork on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 8 p.m. at the Unseen Arena. "This is as close as you'll get to the real thing," said Ray Manzarek, an original member of The Doors.

      Trinity High School will bring 35 varsity players and a junior varsity team to the scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 22, at Hayfork High School. Coach Mike Flint will welcome nine returning starters from last year's 5-5 team that finished the season as the No. 7 Division 3 team in the North Section CIF playoffs.

Vendors are needed for quilt show
      The annual Autumn in the Alps Quilt Show is scheduled for Oct. 4 in Weaverville, and interested vendors are welcome to apply for a sales space at the event. Vendors selling arts and crafts, sewing related items, or food will set up in the Highland Art Center Meadow.

Fiddle contest needs donations
      Planning for the third Weaverville Fiddle Contest is underway, and donations are needed to support the event. Those donating $25 or more will receive two all-day passes to the contest which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center. They will also receive two complimentary tickets to the Sept.
