Musick Notes

By BILL MUSICK

The Lady Timberjacks varsity volleyball team will have its third coach in as many years with the naming of Amy Curry as the replacement for the departed Joanna Schaefer. Schaefer had replaced longtime record-setting Coach Robin Bayley for the 2007-08 team before returning to San Diego to pursue other interests.

Coach Curry began her coaching career with oneyear tenures at Hayfork Elementary, where she coached the Lady Rams, and last year when she coached the Lady Timberjacks junior varsity team. Coach Curry will inherit a championship team that returns intact.

Football coach Randy Harrison will not have as much returning help as does Curry. The Timberjacks will be without the services of graduated Logan Brown, Kevin Byrd, Jonathan Castellanos, Tyler Flower, Nick Gonzalez, Chris Hegler, Eric Randolph, Carson Stokely and John Vert. Returning for the Timberjacks are seniors Cory Warren and Jeremy Maraviov and juniors Ryan Gonzalez and David Van Der Voort.

The success of the Timberjacks will depend on the abilities of junior Ryan Gonzalez and sophomore Scott Harrison to step up in leadership roles.

Gonzalez will have to be the stopper on defense and Harrison will have to run on offense, putting a lot of pressure on the two to continue the success of the football team. The majority of the team will be made up of Harrison's undefeated JV team, leaving the team sophomore laden.

The Timberjacks will host a scrimmage against Trinity High School on Aug. 22, and will travel to Yreka on Aug. 29 to play the team from Chiloquin, Ore.

The volleyball team will open the season at home on Aug. 26 against Etna and Aug. 28 against Trinity. League opponents for the volleyball team will be Westwood, Redding Adventist, Champion, Paradise Adventist and Maxwell.

The football team will compete in a league consisting of University Prep, Tulelake, Mercy, and arch nemesis Maxwell.
