Southern Trinity News
      Blue skies and a light wind with no smoke started our Rodeo weekend out with a lot of happy people. This event was on August 1 and 2. Kodi Millsap won the princess contest and Brooke Rodgers won the Queen contest. Sponsors for the Rodeo are the Six Rivers Lions Club and the Ruth Riding and Roping Club.

New Trinity River district ranger
      Lance J. Koch has been named Trinity River Management Unit district ranger in Weaverville and will arrive for his position here in early September. He is the current ranger on the Pacific Ranger District of the Olympic National Forest in Forks, Wash.

Big Creek strategy meeting
      Watershed management planning strategies for Big Creek in light of recent Iron Complex fires was discussed at a public meeting in Hayfork Aug. 7 at the Watershed Research and Training Center (WRTC). The fires have burned large portions of the upper watershed.

      It's been a difficult week for the fire community. Nine souls were lost in the helicopter crash downriver. Since we all know someone who works for the Forest Service, Cal Fire or other fire service, we all share, to some degree or another, the sorrow of losing these dedicated, selfless heroes.

Donations needed for Weaverville Fiddle Contest
      Planning for the third Weaverville Fiddle Contest is underway, and donations are needed to support the event. Those donating $25 or more will receive two all-day passes to the contest, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center. They will also receive two tickets to the Sept.

      Haven't had a chance to see the North State's latest hit, "Ruthless! The Musical"? Now's your chance. Due to popular demand, The Trinity Players have added a final matinee performance this Sunday, Aug. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Alps Performing Arts Center in Weaverville.

Conservation camp escape
      The Trinity River Conservation Camp in Lewiston reported an inmate escape on Wednesday last week. The inmate, 41-year-old David Blanco, is still missing. He was incarcerated for DUI and failure to appear and had approximately four years to serve on a nineyear term. He is described as Hispanic with black hair and brown eyes, 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 110 pounds.

      There is one space available for the upcoming Weaverville support group for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. There are also support groups in Hayfork and Mad River.

Relay for Life planning
      Nearly 40 people attended Trinity County's first Relay for Life Survivor Reception held last week to honor the county's cancer survivors. Hosted by Round Table Pizza, survivors shared their stories, which charged the atmosphere with compassion, tears, hope, celebration and laughter.

      Saturday, Aug. 16, will be a benefit dinner and auction for Steve and Corina Amore. They were injured in an accident, and family and friends have planned a benefit dinner to help them. The dinner will consist of enchiladas, green salad, beans, rice, homemade salsa, chips and beverage. Senior citizens and children will receive a discount at the door.

      Mule Bridge Project update: Because of fires and the revised budget, the project is postponed until next year. Kent Collard was hoping to have his crew and campers work on the project. Camp ended this weekend and Dave Britt has been working on the fires.

     Mike and Mona Wurth of Coffee Creek announced the engagement of their daughter, Amber Nishea Wurth, to Ben Rydell Wood, son of Caroline Wood and Rick Montoya of Sonora. An early fall wedding is planned and they will make their home in Sonora.

      Cala-Dece Brookins of Weaverville and Jared Traub of Sonoma were wed at 5 p.m. May 17 at the Highland Art Center Meadow in Weaverville. A reception was held at the Veterans Memorial Hall. The bride is the daughter of Diane Campion of Weaverville and Duane Brookins of Redding. The groom is the son of R. Neal and Christiane Traub of Sonoma.

      Kenneth and Betty Scott of Poker Bar/Douglas City will celebrate 50 years of marriage this month. They were married Aug. 23, 1958 in Weaverville. Ken is retired from the Bureau of Reclamation and is the owner of Scott Construction Company.

      Bill and Jean Ann Horstman of Weaverville, announced the marriage of their daughter Gretchen Horstman to Craig Hingley of Bend, Ore. Gretchen and Craig were married on June 1 in the Painted Hills of Oregon.

      The Lewiston Traveling Pinochle Club met Aug. 7 at the home of Lee Springs. Winners were Gloria Jones, first prize; Lee Springs, second; and Gordon Westerby, third. Barbara Brand won the double pinochle prize. The club will meet at the home of Barbara Thiessen on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 10:30 a.m.

RV club keeps planning trips
      In spite of high gas prices, members of the Trinity Nuggets RV Club have continued trips far and near this spring and summer. A trip through Yellowstone, the Black Hills, Badlands and Glacier was thoroughly enjoyed, as was fishing on the coast, and Ashland, Ore. Smoke-free air in the last month has been a wonderful reprieve for members going on these outings.

      The Weaverville/Douglas City Parks & Recreation District is getting ready for the 2008 Co-Ed Flag Football season. There are three divisions: Pee Wee (grades kindergarten through second0; JV (grades third through fourth); and Varsity (grades sixth through eighth). Players in the Varsity division must not exceed age 14.

Rodders ready for Car Show in the Park
      The Weaver City Street Rodders are making final preparations for the 21st annual Car Show in the Park. There will be a "show and shine" in Lowden Park on Friday, Aug. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m., and the car show will be on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be "hit and miss" engine displays, music by the Roadhouse Band, and a raffle of many great prizes.

      The Weaverville Community Band is looking for new members as it begins the 2008-2009 season. The Community Band is being offered as part of the Shasta College Weaverville Campus program. The course, Music 302, Symphonic Band for Seniors, is open to musicians of all ages.

      FUNDS REQUEST: Arnold Whitridge and Chief Benassini met with officials at the Veterans Memorial Hall regarding grants for federal funds to help in replacing our water tender truck. FEMA is the national organization for disaster relief but delegated the training to O.E.S. out of Sacramento.

      Residents in long-term care facilities in Trinity, Shasta, Lassen, Modoc, and Siskiyou counties are seeking assistance. Volunteers can be their link to the community, helping to resolve problems and promoting respect and dignity on their behalf. Volunteers monitor facilities and assist with investigations of complaints and reports of elder abuse.
