So. Trinity News

By WANDA LEVITT 707-574-6536 sunshine@yahoo.com

The month of August starts out busy with the Ruth Rodeo, Ruth Lake Summer Festival and Six Rivers Senior Citizens breakfast.

Southern Trinity Lions Club meets on the first and second Wednesday each month.

Ruth Lake Community Service Board meeting will be held Aug. 14 at 7 p.m.

AARP Six Rivers Senior Citizens luncheon will start at noon on Aug. 15 at the community hall.

Journey's End summer hours have increased. For information, call 574-6441 or 574-6007. Blue Moon Café is open Thursday through Monday. For information, call 574-6251.

Mad River Ranger District and Six Rivers National Forest held a meeting July 26 at the community hall on Van Duzen road with an update on the fires. Yolla Bolly Complex, acres burned 64,658, 15 percent is contained, with expected containment July 31. The wildfires in the Yolla Bolly Complex are in remote areas with steep, rugged terrain and very difficult to access. Due to the remoteness of these fires, firefighters

are based out of three different base camps. Lime Complex, acres burned 53,955, with 74 percent contained, with expected containment Aug. 15. Historic weather data for the area shows the period from March to June 2008 is the driest on record.

Shasta-Trinity National Forest closures include: The Yolla Bolly, Middle Eel Wilderness; the South Fork Management Unit; Canyon Creek Trailhead; Dry Creek Trail; Forest Road 60 from Hyampom to Burnt Ranch, Shasta Campground; and the Cedar Fire as defined by Forest Roads 16, 47 and 60. On the Six Rivers National Forest, the Hells Half Fire Area closure remains in effect. The Yolla Bolly Middle Eel Wilderness, which spans in to the Six Rivers, Shasta Trinity, and Mendocino National Forests, is closed.

Once again, thanks to the crews that operate the engines, dozers, water tenders and helicopters. Thanks to the ground crews and our dispatchers. Last but not least, thanks to the Mad River Ranger District, Six Rivers National Forest for all the updates.
