County fair is on as scheduled
      The 2008 Trinity County fair slogan, "Fairtime Days Are About Country Ways," is being proven this year. Because of "country" characteristics like perseverance, hard work and community spirit, the fair will proceed as scheduled on Aug. 22-24.

Sheriff's Report
      The Trinity County Sheriff's Department received the following reports from June 30 to July 6: June 30 - At 2 a.m., a Weaverville caller reports kids yelling and drinking in the street. A Douglas City woman reports a suspect threw a cat in the river the previous day and a neighbor jumped into the river and retrieved it.

      Northern California firefighters are bracing for extremely hot and dry weather forecast to arrive this week. Temperatures are forecast to exceed 100 degrees in many parts of Northern California.

Roseville firm to provide counsel
      Trinity County Supervisors last week approved a three-month contract with a Roseville law firm to provide interim county counsel services as of July 1. If the long distance relationship proves satisfactory, the board will later consider extending the contract for a longer term.

Fatal crash in Trinity
      The California Highway Patrol reported a fatal vehicle accident in western Trinity County Tuesday afternoon. A pickup went off Highway 299 near Del Loma, resulting in one fatality, the CHP said. Another person was injured and was taken to the hospital.

Church at park on Sunday
      All members of the community are invited to Church in the Park on Sunday, July 13, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Lowden Park in Weaverville. The day will include a time of worship featuring a band, and biblical teaching with the first in a new series titled "Run the Race." People should bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.

Traffic delays for residents of Indian Creek
      Residents of Indian Creek can expect 30-minute road delays starting July 7 and running into mid-August. The County Department of Transportation will be replacing bottom-rusted, ruptured culverts from the 1.52 mile post to the 11.04 mile post.

New records for smokejumpers, air tankers
      The unprecedented number of fires in Northern California during the past two weeks has elicited a record-breaking pace from smokejumpers and air tanker crews. In just the past two weeks, the Redding Smokejumper Base has supported 363 jumps - already more than their 10-year average of about 320 jumps a season.

Information for the terminally ill
      Two state Senate policy committees approved a bill by Assemblywoman Patty Berg that would require doctors to answer their terminally ill patients' questions about dying. The bill, which had effectively been stalled by religious and professional groups, gained new momentum when a series of lastminute negotiations prompted the Catholic Church to drop its opposition.

Ruth Lake festival only a few weeks away
      Get ready for lots of fun at Ruth Lake next month.       The Trinity County Democratic Central Committee passed its second President George W. Bush impeachment resolution in two years. Committee Vice Chair George Bates of Lewiston said this week, "The committee supports Congressman Dennis Kucinich's 35 articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush.

      Local youth from the Human Response Network's Weaverville and Hayfork Friday Night Live mentoring programs are calling attention to the amount of smoking in youth-rated movies and the effect it can have on youth viewers starting to smoke.

4th of July fun at park
      Fourth of July events sponsored by the Weaverville Lions Club at Lowden Park included kids' BMX races on Saturday and Kids' Day with races and other events on Sunday. Paintball competitions were held Thursday and Friday at the arena. The producers of the paintball competition are the Friendly Fire Paintball Group of Steve Quaid, Steve Schmidt and James Price.

Ringing in the 4th of July
      Always a favorite way to celebrate the 4th of July, the bell ringing brings together young and old in a tradition that got started during the U.S. Bicentennial celebration. Bells of all sizes--big, small and in between--were rung by the patriotically dressed crowd, including Brad Miller (left) at the Bandstand on the corner of Main and Court Streets.

Put hold on mail when you go
      Some fires have residents volunteering to evacuate their homes. The U.S. Postal Service is asking these residents to contact their local post office to place their mail deliveries on a temporary hold. This will ensure that the mail is secure while the residents are away from their homes, and provide for a convenient pick-up location.
