Fourth of July festivities continued in full-swing Saturday morning, July 3, as the Weaverville Lions Club hosted children’s races and watermelon eating contests at Lowden Park.

Foot races, sack races, three-legged races, backwards races, potato races and the final wheelbarrow race under the warming morning sun saw children red-cheeked and sweating by the end. With kids winning a quarter for participating and a dollar for placing first in any race, it also saw them leaving with fatter pockets and even fatter smiles.

As the noon hour approached, races gave way to the children’s watermelon eating contest with 14 participants, followed by the adult contest which saw 12 participants.
