Teams tumble in NSCIF playoffs
Hayfork girls miss out on Section repeat
      The Hayfork High School Lady Timberjacks defeated Redding Christian 44-34 in the NSCIF Division 6 basketball semifinals played in Hayfork Tuesday and then traveled to Chico for the championship game on Friday only to lose to the undefeated Butte Valley Bulldogs 45-37.

Hayfork boys upset in semifinals
      The Hayfork High School Timberjacks boys basketball team jumped off to a quick firstquarter lead and then watched as it slowly dissipated in last Tuesday’s 54-51 upset playoff loss to Mercy High School.

Trinity boys lose buzzer-beater in Division 5 playoff semifinal
      The Trinity High School Wolves went down to the buzzer again in the Northern Section Division 5 basketball playoffs March 3, but this time came up short against No. 1-seed Hamilton, 54-53. The No. 4-seeded Wolfpack finished the season 19-9. Trinity’s Justin Jeangerard tossed in 19 points and Jared Atterberry scored 12 for the Wolves at Hamilton.

MUSICK NOTES
      The “A” team for the Hayfork Elementary School Rams survived injuries and scholastic problems to finish the basketball season on an impressive note by winning the prestigious season-ending Junction City Tournament. Coach Steve Amore praised Mr. Cox and Athletic Director Alice Ackerly who together formed the After-school Homework Club.

THS’s Maelfeyt takes fourth in state
      Trinity High School senior Kevin Maelfeyt wrestled his way to a fourth-place finish in the state championships this past weekend in the 140-pound weight class. Three wrestlers from Trinity High School traveled to the state championship held in Bakersfield last Friday and Saturday. In addition to Maelfeyt, seniors Levi Thomason and Chris Harris made the trip.

Strong finish for winning Wolverines
      The Trinity Wolverine U16 girls soccer team traveled to Morgan Hill this past weekend to take on the best teams in the state and were put into a bracket with teams from Pleasanton, Elk Grove and Willits. The girls played Pleasanton in the Saturday morning game and dominated, 3-0.

Wildcats take 2nd at tourney
      The Weaverville Elementary School Wildcats eighth-grade team took second place in the 42nd annual Jaycees Basketball Tournament March 5-6. Based on the Wildcats successful season they were ranked second in the AA division.

DC boys are tourney champs
      The Douglas City Elementary School boys basketball team won the championship game in the C division and the cheer team took third place in the B-2/C division at the Crescent City Boys Basketball Tournament and Cheer Competition during the weekend of March 5-6.

Students compete in mile race
      Two Trinity County elementary schools made quite a showing at this year’s NorCal One Mile Challenge. On Saturday morning more than 50 children from Weaverville Elementary School and Douglas City Elementary School were out of bed by 6 a m. to attend this running event at Lake Redding Park Pavillion.

     Little League tryouts coming up Tryouts for the 55th year of Trinity Little League will be held Saturday, March 20, and Saturday, March 27. Major League, ages 9-12, starts at 1 p m.; Minor League, ages 8-11, starts at 2 p.m.; Minor Farm League (pitching machine) starts at 3 p.m. There will be a mandatory coaches meeting at noon prior to tryouts.

Lumberjacks split games
      The Trinity River Lumberjacks baseball team split a pair of games in the 2010 Haiti Earthquake Victims Tournament at Big League Dreams in Redding this past weekend for an early start to their season.
