A Brief History of Trinity County

A Brief History of Trinity County

Main Street, Weaverville.
In 1830 Jebadiah Smith, a mountain man and explorer, may have been the first "white man" to come to Trinity County. In 1848, P.B. Reading found gold in a river. He then named that river "Trinity.” Today many people still mine the Trinity River for gold.
In 1850 John Weaver won the privilege of naming the town in a game of chance. Then two weeks later he left and was never seen or heard from again. Also during the year of 1850, the recently established state of California Legislature divided up Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity to form the Trinity County that exists today.
Mining was the mainstay in the early days of Trinity County. The Oregon Mountain Group of Claims began operating around 1862. Then in 1892, it was purchased by the LaGrange Hydraulic Gold Mining Company and was renamed the LaGrange Mine. The LaGrange mine, located on Oregon Mountain, was the largest placer mine in the world. It operated from 1862 to 1918.
"The Trinity Times" was the first newspaper to be published for Trinity County in 1854. Next was "The Democrat" in 1855. Then in January 1856, The "Trinity Journal" published its first newspaper. Today the Trinity Journal is still the one and only newspaper for Trinity County.
In 1873 the Chinese built the Joss House, a Taoist temple. The Weaverville Joss House is the oldest and most continuously use temple in California. It is one of the many historic sites to be seen in Weaverville.
