July 4 kicked off the grand opening of Yantra at 515 Main St. in Weaverville with a live performance from Jim French and David Crummey. Although this was the first time Yantra was open to the public at its new location, owners plan to remain mostly appointment-only because this time around, their guitar repair shop is a little different than it used to be.
Customers might remember Yantra being around in 2018, offering beer, food and music, among other things, at regular hours, but now since they’re more focused on their services and they aren’t open at regular hours, Valori Ferrell said they aren’t planning to serve alcohol or food.
Christian Ferrell, one of the two owners of the shop, alongside his wife, Valori Ferrell, said Yantra is more of a service provider than a store that’s open all the time, like their last shop. Their new shop offers services in art, music and technology. They restore and modify guitars and do guitar designs, and custom builds. If a customer wants somewhere to record their music after getting their guitar repaired, Yantra has a recording studio with all the bells and whistles needed to create an album. On top of this, they install many kinds of tech and provide digital design services.
Although their shop isn’t open all the time, Christian Ferrell said if someone comes by and rings the doorbell, he will see if he can help.
“It’s by appointment, but if we’re here, people can ring the doorbell, and we can see if there’s something we can do for them,” Christian Ferrell said. “It’s just that the door isn’t open for everyone so we can explain everything we do. We don’t have time for that. That’s why we have a brochure outside.”
Regarding products, Yantra will still sell some strings and guitar accessories, but now Christian Ferrell is more focused on fixing guitars and selling some of the custom guitars he’s made, he said. Valori Ferrell said they are very focused on what they do this time.
“In a nutshell, we’re constantly evolving, Yantra is always a creation, we’re always in motion,” Valori Ferrell said. “We feel like there’s always a calling, and things are always coming to us.”
Christian Ferrell described Yantra as a concept that’s constantly evolving and a place for support.
“It’s a way of life. The word support is the best description of what Yantra is. That support is in multifaceted ways, support not just for your guitar or computer,” Christian Ferrell said. “We’re supporting the people behind those. More than fixing the device or the instrument, I fix the player, not the instrument.”
